Saw this game floating around online couple years ago, thought it'd be cool to do something fun during these dog days. Like any game, there are rules.

The rules are simple. You’re going to build the best starting lineup out of players who’ve played for a team you like. Here’s how it works.

  1. You need three forwards, two defensemen and a goalie. Position of players doesn't matter (C/W)
  2. A player must have played at least one regular-season game to qualify for a team’s roster. Playoff games do not count in this game.
  3. If a player had multiple stints, you add all of them up. (Doug Gilmour for Toronto)
  4. Active players are allowed, but only what they've done to-date. (EP40 = $71)
  5. You have a salary cap of $200 to work with.
  6. Going by franchise here, so we’ll combine the Nordiques with the Avs, the Whalers with the Hurricanes, the Thrashers and the new Jets, etc.
  7. Each player you pick will cost you a salary of $1 per regular-season game that they ever played for your team. If you want a guy who played one full 82-game season, that’s $82 of your cap gone.
  8. Once you fit a player onto your roster, you get credit for their entire NHL career. Not just the games they played for your team – everything they did in the NHL.
Goal of game: You’re looking for star players who had the briefest possible stint with your team.

Example 1: Guy Lafleur isn’t worth anything to the Canadiens, because he’d cost way too much. But his one season in New York means that a Rangers team could squeeze him in for $67, and they’d get credit for the full Flower experience.

Example 2: Brett Hull and his 700+ career goals? You’re out of luck if you’re the Blues or even the Stars. But a Flames team could fit him in for just $57. And the Coyotes could get him for just $5.

I'll go with.....

St. Louis Blues

Forwards: Wayne Gretzky ($18), Peter Stastny ($23), Glenn Anderson ($51)

Defense: Doug Harvey ($70), Phil Housley ($26)

Goaltender: Martin Brodeur ($7)

Total: $195

Can y'all compete with that? Give it a shot! Have fun with it!

Gustav Nyquist ($19) - Joe Thornton ($82) - Bill Guerin ($16)

Brian Campbell ($20) - Erik Karlsson ($53)

James Reimer ($8)

They’re at $198 this way.

I’d seriously consider trying to find a way to add Ed Belfour ($13) to the team, but I just don’t know how to. If I could find a forward who played 16 or fewer games, I would probably use them to replace Nyquist.

joe thornton has played more than 82 games for sure

That's pretty good. Personally though, I don't want Anderson or Housley anywhere near my team.

F: Gretzky 18$, Stastny 23$, Hawerchuk 66$ (107$)
D: Harvey 70$, Kasatonov 8$ (78$)
G: Brodeur (7$)

Good thread, the rules are clear and it only takes a few minutes to play. :)

Dallas Stars:

Jagr (34) - C. Lemieux (32) - Zuccarello (2)
Numminen (62) - D. Manson (60)
Thomas (8)

Total: 198

On the bench I'd have Lindros (49), not sure how he would fit in

D: Doug Bodger (13$), Mathieu Schneider (17$) <30$>
G: Murray Bannerman (1$)

I missed the part where you specified NHL career, probably I pick some other d-man for the Blues instead of Kasatonov. Almost picked Krutov for the Canucks til I re-read that part.

Ducks

William Karlsson (18)
Doug Weight (38)
Dany Heatley (6)
Mathieu Schneider (65)
Stephane Robidas (14)
Ryan Miller (20)
= 161

You could swap Weight for Fedorov but then you would also have to swap Schneider for Souray.

Toronto Maple Leafs:

Eric Lindros (33) - Ron Francis (12) - Owen Nolan (79)
Phil Housley (1) - Brian Leetch (15)
J.S. Giguere (48)

Total: 188

Might be able to find a better goalie, but I got a bit lazy.

Gerry Cheevers (2$). Unfortunately, I'm not finding an upgrade to Housley for under 60$, so I guess you wind up with a bunch of unused cap space :D

Apparently forwards didn't mind getting out of Calgary quick, but D-men wouldn't leave :dunno:

4,345 points among that forward group... though St. Louis' has 5,505 :(

My hockey knowledge is pretty basic, so I'll just spend the 200 bucks at the strip club and call it a night. Maybe pretend to be a Sharks fan so I can get Ed Belfour to come with me for $13.

So $187 left over, plus the billion dollars Belfour would pitch in and I think I win this game.
