I'm thinking Dreger is trying to invent a story because the Senators are bringing Paul to Sweden (showcasing him????).

Nothing story. He was great two years ago at the WJC. Looked like a possible top-6 tweener. Disappointing season last year and got called out by management.

Apparently he's been better this year even if it isn't reflected in his point totals.

Management did like him a lot but Ottawa has a LOT of prospect around his age. He either needs to take the next step or he he's going to get passed.

Dreger chipped this in for a discussion on the recently-recalled Paul completely unsolicited so I imagine it has to be something he's heard a fair amount of chatter about.

We are still down a winger with Ryan out,so we are taking a look.Big C/LW that has some tools but has yet to show much at the nhl level. He really doesnt have much value

Paul for Slepyshev one for one. We could definitely use some depth at center in Bako this season and with Letestu's deal ending this year, there are some spots open in Edmonton's bottom six moving forward.

Love Paul's game. Excellent on the draw, uses his body well to protect the puck and has a deceptive release on his shot.

Yeah, I don't understand showcasing a guy like Nick Paul. Who would care? But then I remember the wonderful day when Curtis Lazar brought us back a 2nd round pick and I hold out a glimmer of hope.

Can't really see how a meh-scoring 22 year old in the AHL would have a ton of value.
Most here never thought of him as a top 6 forward, but a bottom 6 guy .That has some size and can play C/LW,with some good defensive game

Probably part of a package for a veteran middle-six winger if he shows enough. Still has an NHL future, but he's been passed by a handful of Senators prospects. He certainly won't be the center piece of any upcoming deal.

Management was blowing smoke to justify the Spezza trade.

Management was blowing smoke to justify the Spezza trade.
Why specifically call him out 6 months later then? Why give him NHL games when he's doing well and then not give him any when he was struggling?

Dorion's specific quote was about expecting him to compete for an NHL spot last season and being disappointed.

Wouldn't that undermine the Spezza trade at a time when the Sens were struggling? If the object is to blow smoke, they're doing a piss-poor job of it.

Doens't make a lick of sense. More reasonably they were happy he had come so fats and were legitimately disappointed with his performance and were blunt in order to motivate him given their earlier praise.

Dorion said today that the coaching staff in Belleville told him Nick Paul has been the team’s best forward this season, and that the call up was deserved (not just to have another body in Sweden).

This could be true, or it could be a bit of marketing. Remember when Kyle Turris had the flu for ten days :)
