Yeah they talked Letang up a lot in 2006 and 2007, when he was the captain. He has not played internationally since, though I'm sure he could have played a few IIHF WC had he wanted.
I never know what to think about Letang. He flies under the radar when it comes to Hockey Canada. He's a little long in the tooth so... might be best to leave him at home.

Right now our #1 goalie would be Fleury. He’s more than capable of winning games and stealing games. I also think that he’s a well liked guy, he’s been around a long time, won a lot, players like to play for that.

After that, looks like Drieger is next, then I guess you take Price as your third and hope with a great team in front he regains his form.
Smith from Edmonton. Maybe Hart has a strong 1st half.

Worst case, Fleury plays and helps us forget about 2004.

Someone HAS to step up because when Canada has to rely on a 37 year old goalie, there is something wrong.

The problem I see with Stamkos is he’s for sure no longer one of Canada’s best players. He’s 19th in points per game for Canadian players. He’s probably not even Tampa Bays best Canadian forward. In addition, he’s most a power play specialist at this point, with more than half his goals coming on the PP. I don’t think Team Canada will need PP specialists.

In comparison to Barzal, well he gets less points, but he’s in a much, much more defensive system (Team Canada brass tends to like players that can play in these systems), and he’s playing with less talented players than Stamkos. The quality of Stamkos line mates and D units will not improve that much from TB to Canada. But for Barzal, the talent difference between NYI and Canada will be very large, and talent tends to have an increasing rate of return. Also, neither one will be playing at Center anyways, so, face off ability shouldn’t impact the decision.

Tavares seems to get a lot of his points at even strength, so he’s got good arguments for him to make the team.
Yes to Barzal. No to Stamkos. No to Tavares.

Tried working Chychrun in there but I'd still currently like the 4 LD before him. Consider dropping a RD (Doughty) for Chychrun and moving Girard over to RD. but not yet.
I like most of your lineup.

I watch a ton of Leaf games. Maybe too many. For that reason, I don't want to see Tavares (who is there) or Reilly (who is not). Perhaps I watch them too much and I've picked the corpses dry - finding every little fault.

Tavares looks old for his age - he plays like he's 35.

Marner can't score so he needs a scorer on his other wing. I'd prefer Stamkos over Tavares and I don't like Stamkos.

Don't like Hamilton. If you are going to drop a RD, drop Hamilton.

What about Zach Hyman?

He's been great this year, tho - even TSN did a segment on the possibility of him being on the Olympic team. In 2021, he deserves to be in the discussion.

He has no place in a reasonable discussion of a Canadian Olympic team with NHLers involved and the reason that TSN (Dreger) said something so stupid is very obvious.

His name would never have been mentioned if he played for anyone other than Toronto. TSN is just playing to their Toronto-centric audience. And Hyman would be the worst selection on an Olympic/World Cup team since Rob Zamuner.

LOL. Why is this causing such blowback?

He's been terrific. Would I put him on my team? No. But, as someone who watched every Leaf game in 2021, I can see why some posters might want to include him on the 4th line.

You guys are nuts. :)

LOL !!!

Okay, okay, okay... you ALL win. Not only should Hyman NOT be on the Olympic team, not only should Hyman NOT be in the discussion, he should be banished to the Dutch beer league for the remainder of his career.

I give. :)

Hyman is a nice player and is a significant contributor to the line he plays on with the Leafs but Canada has the luxury of having so much depth that he should never be in the discussion. It would be like a guy like Copp making the U.S. team. Highly unlikely to happen.

Canada gets itself into trouble when we select NHL role players for the same roles on international teams. When Canada selects elite NHL players and asks them to adapt to different roles/situations, we win.

Put Doughty in for Hamilton and... :thumbu:

Nice young defense. Considering we worried 12 months ago, looks pretty good on the back end.

Those forwards are impressive.

not much changed since the last roster...only forgoing some built in chemistry with Makar-MacKinnon for a wish to see Makar-McDavid wweaving some brilliant magic together. Stamkos still on IR to finish the season. So, J.T. is still my guy.

I like Marner with McDavid, so the 97 Ontario boys get a rare chance to play with each other. I think MacKinnon can work with Point.

The Crosby line seems set, but I wonder if it gets broken apart since Marchand is the best left winger. They have great chemistry though.

Smith, Morrissey, Chychurn, and Letang are names to consider on D.

The Crosby line has worked so well in the past, I doubt they get broken up.

So glad Jakob Chychrun has stepped up. Nice to see a Floridian playing for Team Canada.

I have never been sold on Letang but I would like some more experience on the backend so it is either Letang or Doughty. I'd take Doughty.

Gotta think Kuemper heading to the world championships this year will earn him some serious brownie points with management. Might not even be a stretch to say it guarantees him at least the 3rd string role.

Which defense is better?

Nurse-Makar
Theodore-Ekblad
Chabot-Pietrangelo
Doughty

Girard-Hamilton
Toews-Letang
Pelech-Pulock
Weegar

I’m not convinced the second defense is that much worse. However, it seems like those players have nearly no chance to make it with few exceptions. I’d even argue players such as Rielly, Giordano, Burns, Weber are more likely than most of the second team defensemen.

I think Canada currently has the best pool of defensemen so it makes it hard to pick, but I would be a big advocate of Toews making the team to play a Vlasic type role, he’s been excellent in all my viewings
