I agree with this but we sorely need some scoring. That big body can do a couple things. Make us harder to play against or cause more PIM’s something we don’t need with Perry, Maroon and Sergi’s PIMs that’s enough playing on the PJ alone. It’s a gamble it never hurts to have more grit this time of year but they can’t afford to be giving more penalties. From my understanding he's a bigger body and will bring more grit and defensive responsibility. Joseph has 0 finish regardless so we aren't losing any goal scoring.
Plays the PK, JBB trying to make a shutdown 3rd line again

To be honest I just assumed the grit. At 6’3 224 limited scoring I’m not sure what he will bring. We got plenty of smart players and some have limited skill sets. We need secondary scoring. Maybe he can do this for us because Joseph sure wasn’t. Guess we will see I mean he did score the other night.Sens fan here. Noticed Paul had a nice goal last game.
FYI Paul is not a ''gritty'' player in the sense you're referring to, he doesn't take that many penalties and he plays a smart game. He's gritty in the sense that he plays hard all the time, not hits, but he's always hounding the puck, protecting on the cycle, leaning on guys, and using his reach. He's not a gritty player that will get penalties like a Perry or a Maroon or a Tkachuk or Watson. He just plays a very responsible and honest game. He uses his size to his advantage and he's smart positionally.
The best thing about Paul is his brain and work ethic. He's not the most skilled but he knows where to be and he works hard at it. He wins the fitness testing every year in Ottawa, he has great cardio and can play against good players all night. That said, not a guy you want to rely on to score. I could see him being a good playoff player though simply because you know you can trust him. He's played center all his life and then switched to the wing in the NHL so he understands where to be and he understands how to support his center. That's essentially what you'll get. A smart player with a limited skillset.
Thus far I’m not impressed. If you have have a big body and don’t use it your not much help. Maybe he goes all beast in DetroitNick Paul was one of the key pieces going back to Ottawa in the Jason Spezza trade way back when but never really blossomed in that Jamie Benn mold as a mid round power forward. Still, for the price that was a really affordable get for Tampa, prime age big body forward for a playoff run.
I'm sure this trade will be fine for us, and Paul looked great last night, but I'll say it again: I'm sad we got rid of Joseph.
Yeah, one of those was greasy and yeah one was an empty netter, but the dude had been snakebit this season. Bound to even out at some point.
Agree agree agree, except I could take issue on the last point.Honestly, that first goal was the kind of goal that was missing from his game here. I still think he will score 20 in this league, probably more than once. I agree that he was snakebit here more than he lacked finish. I wish him well and expect him to a have a solid career.
All that said, Paul is really fitting well. He showed a few things last night that we haven't seen in a guy that size in quite some time on this team. I'm looking forward to seeing him in the playoffs.
Also... As good as SFY was with identifying under-utilized amateur talent and late-bloomers, JBB seems to have more an eye for the pros, and how guys will fit with the current team. While we haven't seen many draft gems under JBB, I can't think of a trade where a guy came in and didn't fit, given time.
Savard fit in the playoffs though, particularly late.Agree agree agree, except I could take issue on the last point.
Savard didn't really fit, and I think he had enough time. Or maybe he didn't, it's really hard to integrate d-men; I'm glad we didn't try another rental there this year.
Oh, and I'm not sure I agree that the greasy goal was missing MoJo's time here. That felt like most of the goals from him that I could remember. Which is a little off for a guy with his jets and that many breakaways.
joseph stacking secondary assists against detroit and they go crazy. 0 chance he ever becomes a top six player on a good team
Paul has been a beast since joining the team. I think I would rather have the physical presence of Paul then the speed of Joe. Good for Joe finally finishing his chances now but when he's not scoring the guy was more of a liability. He had 3 goals 2 primary assists and 2 secondary assists, seems like a good stat line to get excited about even if it was Detroit. I'm pretty sure Ottawa didn't acquire Joseph to be in their top 6, he can be a very good 3rd liner and PK specialist. He also has enough skills to be able to play in a top 6 spot on occasion and not look terrible. Joseph is a good player he just isn't good enough for how Cooper wants to use his 3rd line, would have loved to keep him but no point if he's gonna be benched in the playoffs. Joseph is adding some money to his next contract with this play, playing himself out of what our price range was for sure.
Particularly late, we were playing the worst Cup finalist in my lifetime and we coasted to a 4-1 win. Savard didn't hurt us, but didn't do much either.Savard fit in the playoffs though, particularly late.
Lol, because of 3 decent games against the Wings and Montreal, man ppl are too funny on this site.Joseph is better. they lost on this trade.
