I wonder if it's like a Lidstrom Effect.. similar to the Pat Roy effect.

In Quebec, every kid who grew up a Hab wanted to be Pat Roy. Wore Pat Roy underwear, ate Pat Roy Pro-Stars.

Then the following decades, there was Brodeur, Luongo, Fleury, Theodore, Giguere, Thibault, Biron, Lalime, Crawford, CLoutier, Garon, Bernier.. was a LOT of them. Several of them were among the best in the league.

Something about Quebec being a goalie factory.

Fast Forward to Lidstroms career, and BAMO. I'm wondering, are there a crazy swarm of Swedish kids who eat Lidstrom Salmiak, drink Lidstrom Aquavit, and have Lidstrom wallpaper on their bedroom walls?

What made Finland a goalie factory though?

Wouldn't say that is quite domination, 3 different Swedish defencemen have been winners of the Norris since 2000.

You made your thread title to read that they have dominated the Norris Trophy which isn't close to the case.

Norris Wins by country:

Canada - 47
Sweden - 10
USA - 7
Slovakia - 1

Canada has consistently produced the best D in the world since hockey was invented.

So hockey was "invented" 1953?

I can say pretty safely that Lidström had relatively little to do with inspiring young Swedes to play D, as he's not well known enough to be someone's favourite player before they've already chosen position. That's more of a media narrative, as you see in almost every Dahlin interview.

Kids his age and up to 15 years older generally grew up with Forsberg as their idol, no matter if they were forwards or defensemen.

That's cool. Nothing wrong with that.

The voting was somewhat but not all the close with Doughty getting twice the 1st place votes. Karlsson caught up because of second and third place votes.

The guy was robbed in the 90s. Even blake won over lidstrom despite being a minus player.

Well, at least you addressed your own argument. Blake can't win over Lidstrom because he was a minus player, so Karlsson could not win over Doughty because he was a minus player, right? Or does it only matter when it matters to you?

I mean it's probably the most disgusting award voting of all time.

Karlsson didn't deserve the one when doughty came in 2nd because of missing the playoffs.

Doughty didn't deserve his when karlsson missed the playoffs.

2 wrongs don't make a right but atleast the voters are consistent with the playoffs or no award when it comes to the norris.

Yeah. Sweden is good at developing defensemen.

I'd imagine it helps when your kids grow up idolizing a guy like Lidstrom, pushes more kids towards being a d-man. Probably something that we will continue to see in the next generation too, growing up watching the current crop.

Should be 2 more too. 2016 Karlsson should have won, 2017 one of Hedman and Karlsson

Lol please. Doughty was superior to Karlsson in 2016 (inb4 82 points argument).

Last year I thought Hedman should have won, but you gotta realize more often than not these days it goes to the defenseman with the most points aka Burns.

Best way to put it - you're also seeing it with Canadian forwards - many of whom grew up watching Crosby.

How many of Lidstrom's wins were gifts? Pretty easy to argue that at least 1 or 2 were.

The last one was a lifetime achievement award.

Indeed they have. It can also be argued that 2 of the best defensemen in the league right now are Swedes.

They have the 2nd and 3rd best defensemen in the league, which is solid. Plus you still have guys like OEL and Klinberg who are top 15/20. Dahlin could join them.
