Seven African American GM's now in the NFL, have hired zero minority head coaches.
Eric Bienenmy didn't even get an interview in Chicago after working with Poles for seven seasons.
Demeco Ryans and Byron Leftwich pulling their names out of the ring were extremely sad to me. Both should have been hired this year. In Leftwich's case I hope it's a thing where he was promised the Buccs job when Arians retires.
Ryans I wanted for Minnesota desperately.
There's a pretty sad explanation for this that probably isn't appropriate to get into here.
Bieniemy is an interesting case. The media makes a big deal out of him not being hired, but you just know that whichever organization hired him would get absolutely slammed for hiring someone with his legal rap sheet.
I think Leftwich got screwed by Shad Khan's weird loyalty to Trent Baalke. I do feel bad for him because this was clearly his shot. Maybe he does a good job developing Trask, but there are moments where you realize coaches missed their chance.
Demeco Ryans and Jerod Mayo are smart to wait for the perfect opportunity. They're young and have a ton of money from their playing career. They don't need to be desperate and take any job that's offered. For example, I thought Flores made a mistake jumping at the Miami job, though I'll admit there was definitely bias, considering I wanted him to be the heir to Belichick.
