The hate for Steigerwald, particularly on the part of Pens fans, was overdone, imo. It's subjective, I guess. Living in the area, I watched a ton of FSNP/RSP/ATTSNP broadcasts throughout the years and I can't recall ever getting triggered by anything Steigerwald had to say or how he said it.

Did he get more excited when the Pens scored? Sure. At least he never crossed over into self-parody as some other announcers have.

Yeah he did announcing for the Penguins hence ofcourse he was more excited when the Penguins scored.Still totally appropriately enthusiastic when the other team scored. Flyers were a team Steiggy hated the most yet look here he really doesent sound that biased

I "live in the area" too, and I understand that he was their color guy, but this guy was a hugely embarrassing homer who would get simple plays wrong and would rile up the home crowd for no reason.
Steigerwald is directly responsible for making the casual Penguins fan dumber.

Steigerwald was just better imo. Mears has worse voice too something that cant be changed.

It's splendid to be able to watch the home feed of my favorite team without grimacing multiple times a game for the first time since Lange was kicked to the radio booth.

He is lucky this was a year or two before social media really morphed into what it is today otherwise there very well may have been outcry's for him to get canned or suspended for his poorly though out remarks here.

Pretty good comedic timing. LOL.

- As of today, Steigerwald is still working with the Penguins (behind the scenes)

- According to Wikipedia, Steigerwald is an Emmy Award winning sports broadcaster

- What if Steigerwald, Errey, Lange, and Mears all worked together?

As long as they have Errey they will have a crappy crew. He is such a blowhard homer he wrecks any game you have to listen to him.

I mean, Hobey Baker died in 1918, I don't think you're gonna get any pushback on it at this point. Anyone who would potentially be upset about it is probably dead themselves.

There was pushback on it at the time.

The Confluence - Kukla's Korner

It's not that people were personally upset on Baker's behalf, it's just that it was an ugly joke to make about the death of a beloved figure, especially on the anniversary.

An off-color joke about Roberto Clemente made in 2062 would still be a head scratcher, even if people don't personally remember Roberto Clemente at that point.

It's the job of the play by play guy to call the game based on the events on the ice. They should be as objective as possible and just report what is happening. The color guy is there to be the homer and give his opinions. Steigerwald inaccurately calls the game to put a homer spin on it and interjects with his hugely biased opinion at every opportunity.
Depends on the sport and how it’s put out there. They’re partners with the team they cover and collectively are creating a whole package for the teams fan base, announcers who are openly fans of the team they cover every game, who aren’t insufferable as a few are, are often loved by the fan base. I don’t think the team and their partner care at all what outside fans think, most outside fans tuning in have their own favorite team elsewhere so they’ve got their immersive fan/team/broadcast package as well, they’re tuning in here for the game itself

Not to say there aren’t degrees of bias or specific things to be more or less bias about, but it’s the national guys who need to be down the middle

eg the Caps guys Joe B and Laughlin (we all concede his voice is annoying. You get used to it like fans of Its Always Sunny got used to the constant screaming first… it’s an acquired taste in a sense), he and Joe B have great, relaxed chemistry excitement in their voice (some announcers sound like they’re calling a baseball game) and many Caps fans love them. They show up to team related events at times, take pictures with fans, know the team well (like actually know the players) they’re a solid duo despite some bias, they still commend opponents goals and acknowledge a great play against the Caps often with excitement…. But like any fan of any team, when there’s a penalty that’s even slightly less than 100% a sure thing of course they’re argue their teams case because they’re fans, and they know their audience lol
