It's the job of the play by play guy to call the game based on the events on the ice. They should be as objective as possible and just report what is happening. The color guy is there to be the homer and give his opinions. Steigerwald inaccurately calls the game to put a homer spin on it and interjects with his hugely biased opinion at every opportunity.
Depends on the sport and how it’s put out there. They’re partners with the team they cover and collectively are creating a whole package for the teams fan base, announcers who are openly fans of the team they cover every game, who aren’t insufferable as a few are, are often loved by the fan base. I don’t think the team and their partner care at all what outside fans think, most outside fans tuning in have their own favorite team elsewhere so they’ve got their immersive fan/team/broadcast package as well, they’re tuning in here for the game itself
Not to say there aren’t degrees of bias or specific things to be more or less bias about, but it’s the national guys who need to be down the middle
eg the Caps guys Joe B and Laughlin (we all concede his voice is annoying. You get used to it like fans of Its Always Sunny got used to the constant screaming first… it’s an acquired taste in a sense), he and Joe B have great, relaxed chemistry excitement in their voice (some announcers sound like they’re calling a baseball game) and many Caps fans love them. They show up to team related events at times, take pictures with fans, know the team well (like actually know the players) they’re a solid duo despite some bias, they still commend opponents goals and acknowledge a great play against the Caps often with excitement…. But like any fan of any team, when there’s a penalty that’s even slightly less than 100% a sure thing of course they’re argue their teams case because they’re fans, and they know their audience lol
