Honestly I am not a big fan of it with Steen's history for being injured I was really hoping for 5 million at most.

I like it. Shorter term mitigates the injury risk for the team while Steen cashes in while he's healthy. The Blues will find plenty of cost savings next year at the goalie position and hopefully dealing Stewart with the cost-controlled Jaskin replacing him. Still plenty of money to invest in a center.

Now we just need a center and we're set for a series of cup runs.

If it were 6 years at that term it'd be a different reaction but three years at that term is fair from both sides. Besides, simply as a human being if there's one guy you don't mind being slightly overpaid (if his production were to drop significantly) it's Alexander Steen. And, with the way he thinks the game and with the way he brings his effort every shift, I see no danger of that dropping off. The only thing that could make this a deal that hurts the Blues is significant injury time.

Compare and contrast Steen's deal with Shell-of-Paul-Kariya's 3yr 18M deal.

This is one of those contracts where you're just happy the player signed. Some may not like the term/money, but the fact that Steen is with us for the next 3 years is huge.

The deal still worries me as he is having a career year but besides this season he has one 50 point season. He should hit in the 60's this year maybe 70's but I really would expect him to produce around 50 points for the duration of his contract. Not a knock on him at all just 5.8 million is a lot of money for a 50 point guy that plays about 68 games on average a season since coming to the Blues.

this. although people were saying he would cost 6-7 million a year for 8 years after his hot start. so I'm happy with the cap hit. and Steen has really just elevated his game since the playoffs last year and I'm not convinced his start was just a hot streak, I think it was a hot streak on top of his improvement.

Also sends a signal to potential other signings/players who might have to waive NTC to come here that the Blues aren't at risk to lose a player like Steen.

I like this contract. I put together a list of player comparables, when factoring in the length of the contract, I think the Blues did well.

Player|AAV|1st Season of Contract|Status
Mikko Koivu|$6.75m|11-12|UFA
Patrick Sharp|$5.90m|12-13|UFA
Alex Steen|$5.80m|14-15|UFA
Mike Richards|$5.75m|08-09|RFA
Jason Pominville|$5.60m|14-15|UFA
Blake Wheeler|$5.60m|13-14|RFA
Mike Ribeiro|$5.50m|13-14|UFA
Ryan Kesler|$5.00m|10-11|RFA
Tomas Plekanec|$5.00m|10-11|UFA

You have to keep in mind that a lot of those players signed their contracts when they were an RFA. If they received UFA contracts, that cap hits would be a lot higher.

I still think it's three years because in his heart of hearts, he's hoping the Jets improve enough over that span to go to Winnipeg. Hopefully he's hoisted at least one Cup before then.

There was no doubt he would stay, I'm a little surprised he received 5.8 million but I guess that escalation is because of the rising cap, so The Blues had to come in higher than they would have liked, but they did get a good deal since it's only three years.

I'm shocked he is getting 1.3 million more than Backes...that's the only part that seems a little off.

BOOM!!!!

Good deal he would have gotten upward of 6 mil on open market.
That's why he only gave The Blues 3 years. Had they offered him $6 million per year, he'd have signed for 5 years. Now, if he finishes this year with 40+ goals, and has over 30 each, in the following 2 years, he can cash in in a big way in summer of 2016.

Good contract. I nor, ally favour longer term deals for key players, but there was little incentive for the Blues to do that, just a bit of a surprise Steen accepted only 3 years.

Last week Affleck is moaning about budget and attendance.

Next week they are signing Steen for 6 million.

Steen 28 years old + 3 years ....31 - so not bad

Great signing for your Blues.

Steen has been a beast this year and was deadly in the playoffs last year against The Kings.

:handclap:
