thought this was a good signing. But then the main boards told me that Orpik is better/Staal is only a small step up from John Moore, so now it's obviously terrible.

Excellent deal for the team and the player. Marc Staal is basically on par with Jay Bouwmeester in terms of the contract except he gets an extra year and a couple of hundred thousand on the cap hit.

Most important thing is that he took less to stay, which as a leader on the team sets an example.

This player is a rare commodity in the league. Having defensemen that can really defend, alongside an elite goaltender means that the Rangers will be a consistent playoff team for years to come. Barring injury of course.

For the mental health of this board, him coming in below the psychological threshold of $6M will keep him from becoming a whipping boy.

If Derek Stepan wants to be deified, he'll sign a hair below that $6M mark.

Not counting on it, but maybe Staal being a little friendly with his cap hit will serve as an example for some other guys.

Between Staal, McDonagh and Boyle, the Rangers have probably saved ~2-2.5 million from where I thought they would/could be. That's a lot of $$

You don't think Staal would waive his newly acquired NTC so that we could get the 6/7 D-Man or the 4th line face off specialist so many fans are asking for?

He did take a home team discount, so I'm sure he will do what's best for the Rangers.

Waive the clause? No.

I believe the contract was written so that Staal would have 3 yrs to go for a cup run. After that.....?

It’s a rebuild.

But if we retain this 2nd to 3rd pair defenseman who effectively plays a 1st pair role in the playoffs, we may miss the 3 year window by not shoring up a 6/7 D-man and 4th line face off specialist.

Without debating Staal's worth or what the team still needs.... I am simply saying that

Staal has all the leverage for the next three years thus I'm wondering what the Ranger could/would offer him to move early?

Oops, my bad. :yo:

I would like to see Staal moved if the team can get back a first round draft pick.

Yeah - you have to sift through Reggie's serious posts and make sure there's no sarcasm there. It's difficult sometimes.

And no. He just signed a 6 year contract with a NTC that lasts 3 years. He's not going to waive it. He's not getting traded.

War On Ice is starting a new salary cap site. Someone gave them the Staal breakdown.

It's not front loaded like the Girardi contract. He got $7M per in the first 2. $6M in year 3. $5M in year 4. $4M per in the last 2 years. $20M of the $33M is paid in the first 3 years.

Steal gets $4.2M,$5M,$6M,$6M,$6M and $7M.

Why wouldn't they front load it?

Maybe Staal didn't want the front load which makes it easier to trade him. The first 3 years are full NTC and partial NTC in the last 3. No move throughout. The last season is $4M salary and $3M in signing bonuses. The Rangers pay the $3M bonus on July 1,2020 and the acquiring team pays $4M for the following season.

If he keeps up his play, we won't have to worry about trading him. This is looking like a sweetheart deal at the moment.

This is backwards from what they said about a month ago. I asked and they said they got in wrong in the post. The deal is front-loaded.

What is interesting to me at least, I'd would have figured players and agents would be asking for bonus money instead of salary as much as they can in 2019-20 because I think both side of the CBA could opt out that year. If a work stoppage happens I think they'd still get their bonus money but not their salary.

Looks like they fixed their error...

Below are details on the structure of Marc Staal’s contract with the Rangers, which goes into effect next season and expires after the 2020-21 season: UPDATE: this was reversed originally. Below is now correct.

Year 1 (2015-16): $4.0M salary, $3.0M bonus — $7.0 M total
Years 2-4 (2016-17 — 2018-19): $5.0M salary, $1.0M bonus — $6.0 M total/y
Year 5 (2019-20): $4.0M salary, $1.0M bonus — $5.0 M total
Year 6 (2020-21): $4.0M salary, $3.0M bonus — $4.2 M total

Again, this results in a $5.7M AAV for the Rangers.

NOW IF THEY COULD JUST UPLOAD LAST NIGHT'S STATS INTO THE PLAYER TABLE, I'D REALLY APPRECIATE IT!
