Saw an interesting stat today (won't say where). Byron is, statistically speaking, our best penalty-killer. He not only suppresses shot attempts the best, if you subscribe to that sort of thing, but over the past three years, when he's been on the ice in 4-on-5 situations, the Flames have scored 1 SHG for every 2 PPGs against. I hope he has a spot in the opening night lineup.

He's the perfect 13th forward.

If someone isn't playing well, or you need to shake up the roster a bit, put him in! I like Byron, but with all the depth the Flames have, there are better options.

Word, Byron is kind of underrated. His advance stats rank pretty well on the team.

Also when is the goalie situation going to get sorted out? The longer this thing goes the more concerning that they'll actually dangle Ortio. Still confused as to re-signing Ramo without moving Hiller.

It's simple.

They don't want hiller to in net for 60+ games but do not feel Ortio is ready to be a starter for 30+ games

Are there? I've established that there is not a single better option for the PK. All of the other possible 12th forwards are specialists in one regard or another, and none of them have shown a penchant for finishing that exceeds Byron's. I think Byron has the better fancy stats, too.

Ferland? Bollig? Shore? Raymond's just a lesser Byron, at this point.

I called it a couple months ago that I felt like we would see both Ramo & Hiller back with Ortio being waived. Why did I feel this way? Because I don't think that Ortio is a future starter and I don't think that Treliving does either.

Doesn't explain the numerous rumors of Hiller being available.

What reason is there to not link where you got the stats from?

I saw the rumour twice, hardly "numerous" times and like I have also suggested I think they wanted a guy who could start 60+ games and were willing to have Ortio as backup in that situation. But they do not want him backing up Ramo or Hiller because they are not comfortable with him in a 1B situation already.

I just realized if Jaden Schwartz has a similar season to his past two seasons he will get paid and St.Louis would be forced to make an Oshie like move again. We could sweep him up or poach someone else. We need another top 6 Forward and he seems like a good fit. He is only 23. With contracts ending this upcoiming season, we would have about 15 - 16 million in cap. The season after the next we also shed some albatross contracts in Wideman, Smid, Raymond and Engelland.(15ish million).

I think it would be a mistake for St.Louis to trade him to keep someone else. Crazier stuff has happened though.

Poirier, our 2016 1st and another big plus is what it'd cost Jaden. Better off staying put.

IF the Blues were still looking to unload some talent for cheap, Calgary should be all over Backes. That fits some holes we have (big, mean centre, good in the dot) and the thought of having him down the middle and Bennett and Frolik on his off-wings is yummy.

To old. Does not fit in our long term plans.

31 years old is too old? It's not like this guy's 35 or 36; he still had at least 3 years of high end hockey and probably another 5-6 years of relevant NHL hockey left in him.

He'd be a nice little stop gap for us while we develop our lines and youth. He's a guy who wears a C, gives it all; and plays hard as hell. Definitely of a form someone like Bennett and Poirier could learn a lot from.

That's just me though; I'm happy running into next season with exactly what we have at this moment.

Man, just fondly remembering the chaos and insanity on HF when it was announced that the Flames, of all teams, sniped Hamilton… for two seconds and a first.

And then the announcement that he was signed for a 6-year contract with an AAV under 6m…

Just gives me warm fuzzy feelings. :)

So I have insomnia. And this is my guess line-up for the 2019-20 season (5 seasons from now). I am leaving some blank spaces as I think it is unrealistic to have a full lineup of current assets.

Morgan Klimchuk - Sam Bennett - Emile Poirier
__________ - Mark Jankowski - __________
Micheal Ferland - Bill Arnold - Hunter Smith
x: __________ - __________

TJ Brodie - Dougie Hamilton

A Sharks fan suggested this and I like it for both teams.

Marleau for Wideman

I think by then Giordano would still be playing on our 2nd or at the very least 3rd pairing...
