Wasn't he supposed to be some sort of a defensive specialist? He obviously isn't good enough to handle a centre like Bergeron (it would be good if he could so Tavares wouldn't have to keep going up against him). He's not physical for a big guy and brings nothing special to the table offensively. He only plays on the fourth line, but it doesn't hurt to have as many advantages as you can have in a series and I wouldn't mind having a better fourth line C going forward.

Bergeron and his linemates are going to log a lot of ice time, so you'd want to match them up against a top line of your own. I think the hope with Gauthier was that his defensive game was good enough to ensure he'd be an NHLer. Need enough of an offensive game to pan out to be more than a fourth liner though.

He’s a low level NHLer, who has a good chance of sticking around because he is a good teammate/locker room guy, and doesn’t make many mistakes.

Hasn’t progressed as expected and really wasn’t an ideal pick. Easy guy to root for though.

His game is pretty basic and he's not a particular weak link out there, but his size seems to be wasted because he doesn't have much of a mean streak. If he was a nastier player out there just think of the kind of damage he could do out there rag dolling guys and being absolutely brutal on the forecheck against Krug and Grzelcyk. But for now he seems to just be a low event player.

Seen enough of this fraidy-cat already. Go find a no-body-contact league and take half your teammates with you.

A soft 4th liner who could use his potential strengh (his big frame) to his advantage. Just a blackhole skating around with nothing between his ears.

A “winner”, according to Babcock.

Reality is he’s a big frame with mediocre skating who hardly uses his size the way he should in his role.

I’d say he’s a below average 4th liner who doesn’t impact the game nearly enough to even bother mentioning that he’s a “winner”.

Gauthier (French: [gotje]) is a French name of Germanic origin, corresponding to the English given name Walter.

Better than many of the league minimum bodies we're about to see parade through town over next half dozen years. If he ever gets over $1 M, it'll be a mistake.

No longer a Leaf
6'5 and as soft as a kitten and doesn't provide much of anything else

False narrative. His hits per 60 were 1st amongst Leafs' forwards this season. He also isn't a poor skater. He couldn't be more defensively responsible.

Skill is his major issue. It's below the level of most 4th line centers. He needs to spend the summer doing nothing but skill enhancing drills. If only he could shoot better.

Our 4th line c for the forseeable future.

Big body who plays ok in o zone for a 4th liner. Starts 3/4 of the time in the D zone and does ok on draws.

He is a replacement level player. Which is what you would expect for a league minimum player.

He is fine. He has upside. He is not the problem. The problem is that we have 3 top 6 centers and play him after every goal.

That’s the problem.

How good do you really think 4c making league minimum are?

He's dirt cheap and fills a jersey. Unfortunately, that means he might make the team next year.
