I understand that most people don't want their team to overpay for a declining power forward who has lost his step, but some of the posts on here and other threads are absolutely ridiculous.

Even if you disregard his past success and only look at his last two declining years, he is still a 20-25 goal scoring rental who provides grit and is perfect for any team's 3rd line (except maybe Tampa). People make it sound like he has an untradeable contract or that he's been a healthy scratch for half the season. He will get a 2nd+, which most Flyers fans will be satisfied with

You're the biggest Simmonds hater there is. Name one 3rd liner "at best" that scores 25-30 a year.

Of the Flyers fan base, that title probably falls to me, not Tripod. If simmonds is in your top 6, you dont have an effective top 6, plain and simple. Outside of this year, Simmonds isnt really driving offense at 5v5. He's the equivalent of a 3rd Pairing PP specialist defenseman.

That isnt to say he doesnt have value, or a role on whatever team has him. But Simmonds today and moving forward doesnt have the production outside of the PP to justify being a top 6 forward, nor does he have the other traits defensive acumen, etc) that would push him there. His defining traits 'toughness and grit' - which are wildly overstated, arent top 6 style traits.

The problem is, most teams acquiring him are going to force him into a top six role that he’s really no longer capable of sustaining. If these teams could be assured he’d get third line minutes and some PP time, more fans would be open to the idea. A first and a decent prospect is also insane for him.

Last trade deadline:

Maroon 57 games, 14g+16a=30 points Big, can be physical.
Simmonds 62 games, 16g+11a=27 points

Simmonds could get "Marooned", who only got back a 3rd round pick last year.
Very important. Simmonds is a consistent 30 goal scorer, Maroon was a 3rd/4th liner

Flyer fan here. I think there have been some bad takes on his value here, and appreciate someone defending Simmer, but he was never really a "consistent 30 goal scorer" at any point in his career, if you are using the normal definition of consistent.

You do realize that the same player can score the same number of goals four years apart and be a fraction of the player he was that first year, right? Why bring up his last three years? He’s not remotely the same guy.

At current rates, you're crazy to think Simmonds is getting a 1st and a prospect back, or similar.

If he's dealt, and I've been saying it this whole time, I can't see more than a 2nd or 3rd, and a lesser second pick. I'd be happy to eat my words, and also feel for the aggravated fan base of the team that over paid.

Simmonds at best will probably get a 2nd round pick and a prospect that will play for the phantoms

Not a hater. I appreciate all he has done. But he is a 3rd liner now. And he was last year. And he will be next year.

His goals are boosted but our PP that was very good. His ES play has been poor the last 2 years.

Love the guy/human. The player has become a frustrating player to watch.

Too many people are having a tough time separating is and was. His Production is down to 21 goals pacing this year, and while thats largely due to the PP being horrid this year, it does still speak to his production as well.

Wayne will always have a place in Philly as a fan favorite. But its time to let go of the idea that hes still a capable top 6er. 3rd liner with top PP time is all thats left.

We've waited so long now, that i wouldnt be surprised at all if he goes for a third with conditions to make it a second at this point.

lot of slobbering going on here without a shred of objectivity, as usual by the same person when it comes to the Flyers..

I don't understand this line of thinking and I think it's the exact opposite.

What have we missed out on by waiting? Is the player injured? No?

You're working yourself into a shoot and cracking under pressure thinking "quick! better take a 3rd now while we still can!"

The end game here is to hope a GM gets jittery towards the end of deadline after watching his rivals get better, and then he thinks "f*** it. Big body presence and character of a Wayne Simmonds will put us over the top. Let's do it."

There is a 75% chance that scenario doesn't happen, and we end up taking the same basic deal that has ALWAYS been there for Wayne the last year or so: a 2nd +.

If the Flames miss out elsewhere I’d offer a 2020 2nd, that becomes a 1st if we win the cup and a 2019 3rd. That’s the absolute max offer though.
