FWIW Friedman discussed this on the Jeff Marek podcast today and he doesn't think it's very likely and doesn't see it working capwise even if SJ retained hugely.

I think if EK is moved it’s in the off-season. With so many teams right up against the cap (and multiple over), it’s hard to fit that contract. I’d look at moving him around the draft.

Acquiring Karlsson and then losing Zub would achieve nothing. They would need to get Karlsson while keeping Zub, Sanderson and Chabot. That's probably impossible without moving DeBrincat.

Or trade Chabot for Karlsson in a cap neutral deal.

I agree with you that offense from the D is not what the Sens are short on but Chabot for Karlsson is a straight upgrade along that offensive dimension and neither one can defend.

Hugely risky trade though.

Alfredson is long retired and is extremely unlikely to come out of retirement.

I don't agree. Karlsson is better than Chabot. That's the point. He also plays the same kind of minutes that you'd want to give to Chabot and neither are the defensive stalwarts that the Sens need more of. The best composition would be EK, Sanderson, Zub, shutdown LD.

He’s still the same injury prone 32 year old defenceman with a pile of years left on a contract that everyone claims San Jose is dying to move, and even with salary retained, blows a giant hole in our cap space going forward.

Not super aware with the Ottawa dynamics but why is there a lack of confidence in signing these two?
