31 Thoughts: How a 24-team NHL playoff structure could work - Sportsnet.ca

Friedman on Martin Jones
Again, no guarantees, but if we go straight to a 24-team playoff, the guys on the league’s seven other teams could have to go nine months without a game. One of them could be San Jose goalie Martin Jones, who is back in North Vancouver.

“Obviously, you want to play, and we don’t know for sure what’s going to happen,” Jones said Thursday. “But if you look back at the last few seasons, I’ve never had time in the summer to get in extended training. Being tired mentally is not something I like to admit. But a step back from the grind could be really good. I feel as motivated as I have in quite some time.”

It’s important to have a positive outlook in these challenging times, and Jones sees how time off could help him and his team.

“It was a trying season for all of us. I’m excited at the opportunity to get some rest and work on my game.”

There will be no excuses for next season if so.

(And a few more paragraphs not quoted, including his reaction to Jumbo's beard poof)

Long term, the Sharks may want to ensure they have an able back up and give Jones more of a (mental) rest down the stretch.

It's a good attitude but there were a lot of physical issues with his game in recent years. I just don't know if he still has it in him from a biomechanical point of view.

You'd be amazed at how many physical issues come from mental fatigue. It can make everything fall apart mechanically.

Mikkel Boedker Signs In NLA

Mikkel Boedker Signs In NLA

looks like he's done in the nhl when his sens deal is up

No surprise. I saw a lot of Sens fans saying he was awful, as in not an NHL-level player, last season. Best of luck to him going forward, he got more hate than he deserved as a Shark, especially since DW managed to turn him into Hoffman, which was turned into a 2nd round pick.

Yeah, he wasn't great as a shark either.

I think the fanbase's expectations were too high as they expected him to be a 2nd line forward. His time with the Coyotes showed him as a soft 3rd line pass-first PP specialist who has consistency issues during the regular season grind; he was a lot like Kevin Labanc. He was also signed during UFA and as such was signed a year longer than what he was worth, but over payments are normal for UFAs.

Anyone else see EK9 on first take? While he was on there partially for non hockey reasons I think he was the first NHL player they've ever had on the show?

article for it:
Sharks' Kane: Athletes like Crosby, Brady need to denounce injustice

I agree completely with everything he said.

As do I, but Kane is gonna be disappointed by the results. Brady goes golfing with Trump, and plenty of white hockey players are bound to be conservative and/or right-wingers possibly even including guys as high profile as Crosby. That Aliu players tribune feature tells us all we need to know. I don’t want to speculate who those are on the Sharks, but I think we can guess that there are more than a few of them on this team. It sucks, but that’s how the hockey community works...

Am I naive for thinking people shouldn't care about what an athlete says or does? Outside of something outlandish of course. I get the kids angle, but no adult is changing their mind over a tweet.
In an ideal world we only listen to people who are super educated in a topic. But that's not how life works. Athletes have an incredible platform with 100s of millions if not billions of followers. They are hugely influential, many people want to be them. Also, if they don't speak on it the silence can also be interpreted, rightly or wrongly, as not caring about the issue enough, which would feed into others being apathetic.
