True, I know Van real estate is nuts like Toronto now. I just remember I had a bunch of friends from Van at university (went to UWO) who went to St. Georges and West Point Grey (my first-year roommate went to Saints), who knew Kane. I got the impression Kane grew up middle-class in comparison to the crowd he started rolling with in Van once he hit NHL money. Not saying he's from the hood or anything. Just didn't think he was from the burbs.

My friend owns a pizza place in South Van near where Kane grew up, and I have some friends that went to JO and Killarney, so I’m in that neighbourhood quite a bit. It’s not a ghetto but I’d say it‘s on the lower end of the middle class scale. I know a disproportionate amount of people who got involved in gangs, drugs, etc. who came from that neighbourhood.

I'm not sure about that. His gross earnings with the Sharks will be 35 million from now (?) minus taxes, escrow and agent fees. If that's a third of his salary, that leaves him with 2-3 millions in debt. I doubt a player of his type will net that much at 34, if he's even still in the league.

He has 32m left on his deal, if he sits this year out San Jose would be crazy to roll over his contract so it will left him 4 years and 26m. He already got 3m signing bonus, if he won't play he'll probably have to return it, but I doubt he still has that money.

The whole sit the year out is a threat to creditors in order to get them to agree to some form of settlement that is more favorable to him then the current terms of his obligations.
That sounds criminal.
Holy smokes. This is crazy.

Sue the team for not putting him into a gambling rehab program.
Lol, Americans...

''Sue McDonalds for not warning that newly brewed coffee might be hot''

You usually demand some kind of individual accountability when you're over the age of 18.
He could easily make that back + if he went to Vegas for the weekend and got on a good heater.
That's what he's been thinking every time he's been to Las Vegas.

The modern day Romeo and Juliet love story from last year:

Woman suing NHL star Evander Kane over '$3 million abortion promise' agrees to reveal her identity | Daily Mail Online

Cliff notes: a woman sued him for reneging on a $3 million payment for her to have her third abortion.

Clearly, the guy has some issues. f*** his parents and family for being pieces of garbage exploiting his issues.
You don’t have his version of the story lol Also lol at her thinking she’d get 3M to get an abortion if it’s true.

She’s probably just mad because he left her. It happens daily. This whole lawsuit screams the typical money grab attempt. Cry me a river.

Or you know he's a piece of garbage who uses money and power to manipulate women, it happens daily, just many of the many lawsuits this guy seems to get himself into. Cry me a river.

He's all good. He could just move to Russia and earn like ~4 million net, take his family with him and leave his debts behind. Plenty of good casinos in Moscow too, but their debt collecting methods can be a bit different than in Vegas.
There is no casinos in Moscow now. I guess there is something thrilling wasting money at an underground slot machine but looking at Kane I think he’s used to something more fashionable.

Yeah... I sincerely doubt women are suing guys daily just because they're angry that the guys left them.

Except by filing for Chapter 7, he's has to sell his assets because they go into a bankruptcy trust.
But he won't have to cover all of his debts. That’s the point of the Bankruptcy. It’s gonna cost him less.

His secured creditors will get a fraction of the money owed and his unsecured creditors will get nothing.

Apparently he was near replacement level next year. Given age hard to see that improving much...
