The Avalanche took him in the seventh round of the 2018 draft and coaxed him to come to North America for the first time this season.

“I talked with my agent,” Shmakov said. “I had a three-year contract (offer) with Novosibirsk, had a choice to stay in Russia, in the KHL. But I’d have been second or third choice, would have played less. So I talked to my agent, talked to Colorado, and they say I need to go here if I want to play (in the NHL).”

Good article, but found this interesting.

Very interesting considering bringing him over this late really limits the options. He can only spend this season in the USHL then it's either the NCAA or some NA low level pro league. Are they prepared to put him in Utah next season or in the SPHL? It's good to know though the Avs just haven't wrote him off and are trying to develop him.

What's it like being a 6-foot-7 Russian goalie named Shamil...

No word on Avs are going to sign him or where he plans on playing next season, but if Avs plan to do something its good to know that Kadri won't be alone.
