lol, it's funny when the only arguements now are "papering the numbers." Sens aren't the anomaly on that one. The overwhelming majority of pro sports franchise do that. Hell, it's part of basic business practice in pro sports....unless you honestly believe Cali has the best hockey fans in the league.

Yep.

The only major North American sport that DOESN'T include comps as part of their attendance figures is MLB, who have gone a different way of cooking their attendance numbers - having a sliding rule as to what constitutes a "sellout" (for instance, teams like Cleveland and Seattle are notorious for claiming a game "sold out" when there are tens of thousands of empty seats in the stands unsold).

Every other North American League does it. Over half of NFL teams "sell" thousands of tickets on a weekly basis to team sponsors for pennies on the dollar (literally tickets for a dollar in some cases) in order to avoid games being blacked out on TV. Obviously, teams like Green Bay (waiting list for decades to get season tickets) or New England don't have to do this, but outside of a dozen teams at most, it's a reality of the league. The NBA probably has 3/4 of the league's teams heavily papering their buildings. The majority of the NHL - I'd place an educated guess at about 2/3rd of the league, gives out freebies in the thousands per team.

Every North American league except MLB has cooked attendance numbers. In fact, since we stopped that practice, we are one of the few teams who don't sell out whose paid attendance numbers are actually somewhat accurate.

Could this indicate that Melnyk is not selling the team since he’s meeting with the Mayor?

He might be telling the mayor that he sold the team and that he won't be coming back.

Who knows?

A few posters said something happened in terms of ownership and Lansdowne so we will find out soon.

Pretty much. This deserves more than just a like.

At the end of the day you dont ever get accurate numbers to compare teams so its really tough. Bums in seats doesn't always equate revenue and paid seats can include steaply discounted aeats sold to resellers that never get used.

We are struggling now not because of a bad fanbase relative to other teams but because of a pretty lousy product/marketting

As others have pointed out .......... you can't just totally dismiss the Phoenix Pay fiasco, as it affects the largest employer in the region.

You can market someone to death, and offer them deals up the ying yang, but if they're unsure whether or not they'll be paid or not, they're not going to spend money on any form of entertainment.

It's not just one thing that is to blame to the lack of paying customers in the last two seasons, there are a number of reasons.

This has been the case for YEARS! Seems like marketing was the first place Melnyk cut to bare bones. How do you have a top 5 player in the NHL who is quite charismatic and has a great personality and not have him plastered all over the city marketing your team??

Where is this funding going to come from?

He can’t affoard to pay a regular NHL front office, needs a $135M loan to get cash and we’re supposed to believe he’ll be able to fund a multi billion dollar project?
