Ottawa’s always come up short in nets. Had they had solid goaltending back in the heyday there would be a couple Stanley Cup banners hanging from the rafters of the Hotel Melnyk. Condon sucks and no he hasn’t addressed the lack of depth between the pipes, nor will he ever. This team is last place garbage. Coaching style also sucks, the GM is a moron and the owner broke n delusional..

Anderson got hurt what, 2 games ago? Idk, running with your 3rd string goalie as a backup isn't that uncommon, and while I probably would have picked up one of the waived goalies a while back, this season was a lost cause long ago, so I don't expect us to go after a legitimate starter.

Don't get me wrong, I think we should have been exploring other options all of last season when both goalies were crap, but I don't really see how we've handled things this season specifically as all that problematic when viewed with all the context.

The context includes a really young roster and a very marginal D-corps.. You need goal tending to give you a chance.. How long has it been since Condon was waived.. McKenna was not brought in here to be a backup; he was brought in to mentor the guys in Belleville. McKenna is what 35 and played a total of 34 NHL games (10 for Ottawa).. Obviously not the answer.. Condon isn't close to ready to returning and that writing has been on the wall. Dorion needed to do something here.

Our blueline sucks, and every non-Anderson goalie we've seen so far in an NHL uniform can't hack it long term. McKenna has been as good as we possibly could have ever imagined, but he's going to regress back to his old self eventually, which was evident last night.

The fact that we outright waived Condon like 2 games (for him) into thr season suggests that there was, at some point, a lack of confidence in him before we got to the point of waiving him. These things are a process. Why not sign a more dependable AHL guy than a 37 year old journeyman?

Oh, and our blueline sucks. Like, really bad. Boucher is a problem, but this is a skill issue, too. DeMelo is at best a mediocre 2nd pairing guy, more likely a good 3rd pairing guy, but he's been carried on the 1st pairing by Chabot, our only legit top-4 defenceman, who is making Melo look miles better than he actually is.

Lajoie should be a 3rd pairing specialist at this point in his career, but we're all angry he's not getting more 2nd pairing minutes... And that's not his fault, or the fans fault, it speaks loudly about our lack of literally any other options.

Ceci, who even knows with that guy. He'll have a game where he looks really good, followed by two games where he looks like a tourist on the Canal who has never skated a day in his life. He's a top-4 defenceman like 30% of the time, and a panic machine the rest.

Jaros is young, and makes young defensive mistakes. Expected for a player with his experience, but he needs to be sheltered by guys above him in the lineup until he gets more NHL minutes under his belt, and he's not getting that support.

Harpur is at best a 6th guy. Nothing wrong with that, but we're just acknowledging his limitations here. He's not an answer to our top-4 woes, and never was. I'm just glad he seems to have learned from last season's disastrous season.

And Boro... Another guy who is a #6D at best, but plays way higher on this limited blueline than he should and gets thoroughly punished for it. On a blueline that is built on skill instead of payroll, you have one of Boro or Harpur. Not both. Having two guys like that out there who play that kind of game significantly limits your options.

So what do we have as our defensive assets, assuming they are playing where they should be?
We've got a good 1st pairing defencemen in Chabot, a "probably ok" 2nd pairing guy in DeMelo, a total trainwreck of a 2nd/3rd pair tweener in Ceci, and then a half dozen guys who currently shouldn't be anything more than 3rd pairing filler.

Of course the blueline looks bad this season. That's because it is bad. We were able to surprise some teams to start the year with a new system, but that edge is gone and we're now seeing what this blueline really is.

Also: how we haven't done a damned thing about our goaltending since waiving Condon is borderline negligent. We made a mistake on the Condon contract. It is what it is. Just accept it and find an actual NHL caliber backup goalie. Finding backup-quality goaltending has to be just about the easiest thing a GM can do (based on a very deep pool of NHL-caliber backup goalies vs only 60 NHL goalie jobs up for grabs), so the fact that we haven't yet done anything suggests either GM incompetence, ot a lack of willingness to pay for one. I'm going with the latter.

What bothers me the most about the current goaltending situation is the opportunity cost of giving starts to guys like Condon and McKenna, who aren’t going to be long term solutions. I get that the team wasn’t going to invest in a high end goalie, but they’ve had a year now to find someone with the potential to maybe take over for Anderson, and have done nothing. I quite like Gus as a prospect, but just waiting on him and Hogberg to take over the reigns is irresponsible.

As you say, potentially interesting goaltending is among the easiest things in the league to acquire, and here we are giving starts to Mike McKenna. Finding a backup with some upside should have been a major priority since, like, April. But here we are.

So, to be fair, Anderson has been playing most games, and the games that McKenna got in for he did pretty well in up till now.

Idk, goaltending is low on my give a crap meter atm. We need a new coach imo first and foremost. I don't think you can properly evaluate goaltending in this cluster ..ahem... of a system.

Condon played 40 games in the 2016-17 season.

He finished the season with a .914 Sv% and a 2.5 GAA, and did not have a contract for the next season.

Remember, all he cost Ottawa was a 5th round draft pick.

PD then signed him to a three year contract, addressing the "area" of having a legitimate NHL back up goaltender.

It's so easy to sit back, and snipe at Condon, and trash the team in general, with the advantage of hindsight, blaming him for the teams poor 2017-18 season ......... BTW, he did have the better numbers between him and Anderson last season, but neither had seasons that they'd be proud of, and that goes for the rest of the team as well.

Back when PD brought in Condon, and then after the 2016-17 season when he was signed, no one was trashing the GM or Condon, in fact it was seen as one of PDs best trades, and pretty much everyone thought the signing was a good solution to the backup goaltender situation.

So sit back and snipe if you must, but from my perspective it's false take, to say the GM did not address the back up position.
Lol dorion spent 6 million dollars a year to lock up back up goalie and fourth line center.

Saying “look he signed a back up goalie!!” Is not good enough. He has to be a....good back up goalie... for a ....good price.
