Scott Laughton (thread originated in 2013)

there's only so much you can do both offensively and defensively when your linemates are useless.

not worried about Laughton as much as i am the fact that he'll keep getting saddled with terrible players.

Would be nice to see him tried on the left side in the top 6 with his good shot. Being able to move Raffl back to anchor a 3rd line would do an enormous amount for the bottom 6 group. It's nice that Raffl can fill in top 6 when needed but he isn't a legitimate top 6 player and has a lot more to offer the team in a 3rd unit checking role.

Let's see, the Couts line is playing great, so of course let's move Raffl off it.

Or maybe we stick with what is working, and eventually improve the players on the third line (Cousins, Leier, Konency next year).

I was referring to longer term thinking, not that Raffl's current 1 assist in 5 game streak isn't truly riveting,, he clearly drives this line.... He is a bottom half of the lineup player and would bring a lot more to the team in that position, especially right now when our bottom 6 is a complete boat anchor.

The Couturier line has been good or great no matter who the wingers have been this season.

Replacing Raffl with an actual top 6 winger would have a great effect on the lineup.

As far as Laughton goes, I think that, in recent history, he's been overrated in terms of potential. I'll be happy if he can just become a solid two-way third liner at this point.

Couturier plays well with anyone. He's arguably the most important player on the team and, at the very least, in the top two. Couturier tends to stick to his game and do what he does regardless of who he's playing with and, this season at least, whoever is on his line tends to look better. It's not really a huge concern of which candidate plays with him so long as it's not a guy like VDV or White.

The issues with the lineup definitely revolve around high level D-men and having a competent third line though. That's just a personnel issue though, nothing to do about it short of calling up a few guys.

Last year Laughton showed some real flashes offensively. His entries into the offensive zone were very good and SAFE (not blind or putting himself in a position where an odd man rush the other way could happen). I remember many of his passes and attempts to set up plays wentunrealized by hhis wings because they just didn't have the offensive "vision" Laughton showed.

I think he has it in him to be a solid middle 6 forward but his play in the defensive zone this year has been very alarming. I've seen far too many times where he's trailing the play, chasing other forwards and blowing his assignment to where a goal is scored against us. Him blowing his assignment has directly led to far too many goals against this season. THAT'S what's concerning about him to me. I'm fine with his offense not being there this early and I can accept him having some struggles defensively as he's still learning the game at this level. However, it seems like every time he's on the ice he's blowing an assignment that leads to a scoring chance against. EVERY time, and I think that's why Hakstol doesn't have confidence in him right now

No doubt. It would slide everyone to where they should be.

2nd Line Winger - Couturier - Schenn
Raffl - Laughton - Read
Umberger - White - Bellemare
VandeVelde

Would like to see Hextall address this in the summer. No need to sit on the cap space if we can find an affordable option. If only Konecny was a LW!

if we're sliding people where they should be Umberger should slide his way to Lehigh Valley

I like Laughton, but he has reverted to making some plays here and there that remind me of the trouble he got himself into last year... only right now I'm not sure if he's doing it because he isn't keeping things simple like he should -- or his linemates have been so bad he's trying anything to make something friggen happen on it.

No worries. He'll be bought out this summer.

Yep... and once he has gone there will only be one crappy contract left on the Flyers in Andrew MacDonald.

2016-17 will be the first year since they are not in cap hell since.... when? The day the cap was introduced in 2005?!

The end of 2006-07 is actually pretty much the only time ever I remember us having actual cap space... 2005-06, nope, 2007 to present, nope.

Does anyone have the Flyers cap numbers for each year since the cap was introduced?

The actuals are in wikipedia, AA, under list of team payrolls.

Unfortunately shows payroll and not cap, and includes players acquired at deadline in full... though frankly the numbers are likely similar give or take 1m... and the Flyers were at:

2005-06 (39.0m): 42.567m
2006-07 (44.0m): 43.749m

Though last night found NHLnumbers has the rough yearly cap for each team from 2007-08 onwards:

Year (NHL cap): Total cap hits (how they got the **** under.)

2007-08 (50.3m): 56.563m (-7.82m in LTIR, -0.20m in bonus cushion)
2008-09 (56.7m): 66.175m (-11.49m in LTIR, -0.23m in bonus cushion)
2009-10 (56.8m): 61.353m (-4.97m in LTIR, -0.9m in bonus cushion)
2010-11 (59.4m): 61.24m (-1.73m in LTIR, -1.6m in bonus cushion)
2011-12 (64.3m): 70.025m (-8.37m in LTIR)
2012-13 (70.2m pro rated): 75.121m (-4.92m in LTIR, -2.74m in bonus cushion)
2013-14: (64.3m): 69.447m (-5.29m in LTIR, -2.93m in bonus cushion)
2014-15: (69m): 75.561m (-7.87m in LTIR, -1.18m in bonus cushion)

This year we are heading for ~69.8-70.4m... (assuming no trades and dependant on call-ups etc)

assuming they were over in 2005-06. (they were for sure, had to waive Stevenson and use Primeau LTIR to be under.)

and 2006-07... where I am not sure, think they may just have been, maybe not, they shed salary heavily at deadline, Forsberg, Kukkonen, Calder and Zhitnik gone was a combined ~$11.5m, and Biron, Parent, Upshall and Coburn combined coming in were ~$4.2m. Certainly would have been close.

it will be the first year ever that the Flyers have been under the cap without using LTIR! :amazed:

Seems it was the end of 2006-07 that was the only other time in cap era history they actually had 'real' cap space!

Amazing job by Hextall, overall. He's cleaned up the cap and added a ton of draft picks in less than two years.

He's looked like a new player the last 2 games playing LW so figured I would give this thread a bump. Ideally I'd like to see him stay at LW for the rest of the season to see if there's a chance the move there could be permanent.

Im glad Laughton has found his game again in these last 2. I'm perfectly okay with him finishing the season at winger. I think he has more to offer than most suggest, it'll take some time.
