That Duchene trade man... very rarely does the team trading the star player receive anything of real value, but this was a grand slam.

Still early, but it's one of the most glaringly lopsided trades I've ever seen. Only ones in recent memory that can rival it are the Erat for Forsberg and the Gomez for McDonagh trades.

Reminiscent of the contracts Nashville has handed out to Josi (7x4M$) and Ekholm (6x3.75M$) edit: Ellis (5x2.5M$). I think that a 20-minute 20 year old defenseman is a pretty safe bet to be worth 5M$ and I think he'll be close enough to that value this year. I still have doubts about his offensive tools but his transition game is already magnificent and his defensive faults are more related to his inexperience than his size IMO. Ultimately a very good (small) risk to take.

I find it rather amusing to have been talking about this precise AAV earlier today (not that there weren't many others predicting roughly that too)

Assuming they take the next step in their respective development,

• Girard will probably see a bump of $4m to an AAV of $5m;
• Francouz a bump of $2m to an AAV of $3m; and
• Jost a bump of $2m to $3m.

As a 20 minute per game D-man who played 82 games last year, Sam Girard had 6 PIMs last year. Pretty impressive.

He only has 12 PIMs in 150 games with the Avs.

This contract is actually insane. If Girard signed a 1 year deal right now he’s worth 5M. Instead it’s a 7 year deal. Not just any 7 year deal either. This is a 7 year deal that doesn’t even kick in until 2020. He’s only getting paid like 700K this upcoming season LMAO.

This is a guy who was a proven top 4 defenseman as a 20 year old sophomore last year. Probably even a legit #3D if you want to break it down more.

27 points. One of, if not the best puck mover in the league last year. Solid defensively. Doesn’t ever take penalties. Played top pairing minutes (actually played more per game than Barrie 5v5).

If he’s not worth 5M right now he’s pretty damn close.
