The advantage with RNH is that if in 2 years you need cap space, instead of worrying about whether he'll re-sign or not, you just trade him and recoop some assets.

Meh. We will have more than enough flexibility moving forward. Only guys signed past 3 years are Sid, Geno, Letang, Kessel, and Maatta.

Hope we stay away from Duchene with the asking price Sakic is going to want. Still hope we can upgrade our D a little, like with Zadorov perhaps?

I missed most of the conversation, but I don't know why RNH would be a more reasonable and attainable 3C than Duchene. RNH would cost a pretty penny to acquire too and Edmonton doesn't have to trade him (while the Avs basically have to trade Duchene).

There's also the fact he's nowhere as good as Duchene, yet makes as much as he does.

Soothing tells me Sakic would be just as ridiculous with Zadorov as he is with Duchene and he's been asking for a defenseman for Duchene.

What are people's D lineups if we're adding a D-man? We already have arguably the best in the East from 1-7.

I get not wanting to subtract from it, but our top 2 RD are established and we're already paying a guy 4 mil to play on our 3rd pairing if we keep Cole/Schultz together which is a no brainer. That, or we're paying Schultz 5.5 to play on the 3rd.

The Penguins D pairs should be:

Maatta-Letang
Dumoulin-Schultz
Cole-Hunwick
Pouliot-Ruhwedel

Expecting Cole to play at a top-4 level again next year like he did this year is needlessly risky, IMO. Put one guy who can anchor his pair on each pair, Letang on the top pair, Dumoulin on the 2nd pair and Cole on the 3rd pair.

I'd be willing to bet Cole does a better job with Schultz than Maatta with Letang. But we shall see.

Could go many ways on D but if you wanna go with pairs you know who've worked well:

Dumo-Tanger
Cole/Olli-Schultz

is the most likely template.

ETA: "If we're adding a D-Man" ?
You'd have to tell me who we're adding first.

Oilers will be dealing RNH at the end of next season when they run out of cap space. Chia has a history of giving away young guys so you never know.

I'd love some analysis on guys in the gettable range via trading money off the roster.
Like 4M max but more in the 3.5M range and under 3C's.

...

Perhaps i'm missing a guy like i did with Richardson but i doubt it.
I'd just love to get a deeper look into 2M to 4'ishM guys.

Restrictions:
- average 7+ FO per game in at least one season (I made only exception with Coyle, don't ask me why)
- play 40+ games AND have 24+ ES Pts pace in at least one season
- 4 000 000 cap hit maximum

Notes:
- Resigned: player was resigned this summer and is unlikely to be moved
- (Resigned): player was signed during last season
- numbers are for 2015-16 & 2016-17 seasons (if there is only one number, then it's for 2016-17)

Am I the only one that would have rather signed Daley over Hunwick?

I mean they both got 3 year contracts, and Daley is only a few hundred k more, They might have even been able to get him a little lower than Detroit paid.

ETA: "If we're adding a D-Man" ?
You'd have to tell me who we're adding first.

You're likely not adding someone better than Maatta or Schultz. Which is my point. The assets it'd take to add a legit top pairing guy would rival Duchene, and from what I've seen the past two years, forward depth is what has won us our Cups.

Why even look at the blue line? Especially after we spent 8 years with Shero trying to create Nashville East.

Am I the only one that would have rather signed Daley over Hunwick?

I mean they both got 3 year contracts, and Daley is only a few hundred k more, They might have even been able to get him a little lower than Detroit paid.

Daley's older and coming off ankle injuries. He loses his speed and he's pretty useless. Plus I think they were looking for someone who's a bit better defensively and can move up the depth chart to pair with Schultz/Tanger in a pinch.

If you look at the deeper stats last year, Hunwick was the more effective D-Man and Daley dragged down guys he played with.

Again, i'll keep saying this, Sam Ventura is JR's ace in the hole.
They know Hunwick, if he plays like last season is worth the $.

Most played worse with Daley this season and he's had some significant leg injuries and skating is his biggest asset.

I feel Hunwick is the guy that they want to take Cole's role when we can't pay what he will be offered.

I think Hunwick will be a pretty solid fit here and Daley signed for almost a million more than Hunwick. We made the right move, IMO.

Daley was 1 million more/year so it's not even close.
He is a couple of year older, more injury prone and would be 37 at contracts end while Hunwick will be 35. Huge difference....

I do not see anyone who is realistically possible and wasn't already talked about.

Well, in your otherwise remarkable break down, I think perhaps the only one missing is Wild Bill Karlsson at a juicy 1 million dollars :).
Yeah, he only had 25points, but that is also his absolute floor and due to a heavily defensive deployment.

Get him for futures to man 3C and see him grow into a very good such, add Cullen or no one for the 4th, and carry cap-space into the season that will provide some flexibility at the deadline.

Knowing that Cole-Schultz works well, and still not entirely trusting Maatta to carry a pair, Id like to see Dumo-Letang and then the other two pairings split the remaining time. Can't say I remember too much about Hunwick to know who his game would gel with so don't mess with the known pairings just yet, but by all means experiment during the season.

And Daley isn't going to be worth that contract. He fits the system here and not many places is he going to be able to use his tool set like here. Especially as someone who tended to go all over in the O zone. And I'm really hesitent with all his recent lower body injuries the past two years, dude is going to fall off hard before he's done.

Oilers are in complete win-now mode. If they don't win this year, it's going to get all the harder with the cap. So, it's their year. No way they trade RNH unless it's for all pieces that will help them win now, and we don't have anything to offer them.

Even though I'm greedy for a pricey 2c on the third line, lately I'm thinking that JR should just forget about it until he has a great deal on whoever. This team can withstand almost anyone at 3c for at least 60 games. Get Sheary signed and see what happens. Phonecalls will be made when necessary.

Soothing tells me Sakic would be just as ridiculous with Zadorov as he is with Duchene and he's been asking for a defenseman for Duchene.

Ideally he's looking to for that #2 or #1 LD depending on what he gets for Duchene so his defense can be:

Zadorov/New Guy, Johnson
New Guy/Zadorov, Barrie
Barberio, UFA - Watch it be Franson.

I mean, Maatta definitely would look like a huge help to that defense, hell Ruhwedel would as well, but I don't know if I want to pay up for Duchene. The longer I think about it, the less I am on board with the idea of Duchene and what we'd see this team giving up.
