Don't tell me how to live my life, Cole

But for real, I'm all on the Karlsson train at this point after reading more on him. He'd be a great fit with either Sprong or Kessel on his line and he'd probably fit the system better than either Sutter or Bonino did. It sounds like Vegas wants pure picks for him, I imagine a 2nd rounder straight up could get close to that, maybe like a 2nd and 4th. The Penguins can keep their entire team together and they also have some space for Cullen if he decides to come back, since Karlsson only costs $1 million this season.

This is just my opinion, but I don't think Vegas will trade any of its players until training camp gets under way and they see what they have (and how everybody is fitting in). Obviously, they have a glut of centers but a guy like Bellemare (for example) could easily be waived and play in the AHL for them this season.

So, I don't know if JR is willing to wait that long to secure a No. 3 center. I think a deal with an established team could be done more quickly. Especially if it's a hockey trade.

Trades involving players for picks are not easily made this close to training camp.

But it's more authentic when you guys do it... :D

Kidding.

All right JR, do your thing and get soemthing done here so we can all start gnashing our teeth about potential line combo pitfalls. It's the HFB way.

Either JR is hunting for bigger game, or Vegas is holding out for higher picks. Of course, now would be the time McPhee decided he needed a premium pick after giving away lots of good players for very little.

I am hoping it's the former, and we have a backup plan of Karlsson for a 2nd, or 2nd + a bit more. I'd rather just have Karlsson and give up less than send a bunch of roster assets out the door. The current roster is darn good, especially once Cullen convinces the wife.

I think we have a general idea of what's going on or what JR is selling as going on. They could trade for a solid 3C now but are waiting for someone they like better to become available/cheaper. Now, we all have our theories and manifestos about who that could be but there are/were fallbacks. Vegas makes the most sense as a backup plan because, well, McPhee has been giving things away nice and cheap.

http://www.thehockeynews.com/rumors/article/rumor-roundup-penguins-still-seeking-third-line-center

He thinks the Pens should or are pursuing Sheahan. Please no. If JR can't get anyone better, I would try out Johnson and ZAR or any in house candidates first and if that's not working after the first two months, then try to trade again. Sheahan is pretty bad

Honestly, they're ignoring context.

It wouldn't be the first time Rutherford took a chance on a struggling player. Defenseman Justin Schultz's career was rejuvenated after the Penguins GM acquired him from the Edmonton Oilers before the 2016 trade deadline.

It wouldn't be, but Schultz was brought in as a 6/7D and then signed as a bottom pairing rehabilitation project when Pouliot was expected to not go down like the Hindenburg. It was much lower risk than gambling on a 3C and the org had Niskanen to reference as someone they rehabbed on D. It's also why someone like Bjugstad may not be on their radar.

TIL sheahan's ppg has dropped every season since he broke into the league.

0.571 (42gp), 0.456, 0.309, 0.160
-0.115, -0.157, -0.149

Detroit has been getting worse in that time but that's pretty damn steady. Normalizing his shooting percentage to 10% brings him to 21 points in 80 games and 0.263ppg. More in line with a team that's worse.

I agree that Vegas looks like the likely team to deal with. Does anybody know if Lindberg has a history of killing penalties in Sweden? It looks like Eakin, Karlsson, and Haula all do.

OK, got it. I think the person who closes usually starts the new one. I was confused and just waited, lol.

Arbitrator awarded Schmidt 2 years at $2.25. Vegas wanted to pay a lot less.
Maybe we could get a three way trade going whereby we get Schmidt for a pick and/or prospect, and then flip him to TOR for Bozak, or keep him and then trade Maatta for a center...
You know, it's August. Desperate for news

Karlsson or Lindberg for picks, and if Cullen doesn't come back, let our WBS kids fight it out for 4th C. Call it a summer and JR can figure it out at the trade deadline if it's not going as planned.

If JR feels he can wait out Sakic, I still say that's the guy. Go big or find a guy for cheap. I'd much rather ante up for someone who's a legit difference maker than move a high pick and/or one of our cheap wingers for a middle of the road guy. That player at least has to have some untapped potential.

Yeah I agree with this. This lineup:

Guentzel-Crosby-Sheary
Hagelin-Malkin-Hornqvist
Rust-Karlsson-Kessel
Wilson-Cullen-Reaves
Rowney-Kuhnhackl

Maatta-Letang
Dumoulin-Schultz
Cole-Hunwick
Ruhwedel

Is clearly the best team in hockey. Add on Sprong later in the year in Hagelin's spot and the Penguins will be totally ready for the playoffs.

That's what I see to start the year, too. When Sprong comes up (he should strictly be playing and getting used to LW in WBS):

Guentzel-Crosby-Hornqvist
Sprong-Malkin-Rust
Hagelin-Karlsson-Kessel
Sheary-Cullen-Wilson/Reaves/Rowney/Kuhnhackl/Archibald/ZAR

That's some great depth and balance, and you have $2m in cap space and assets to go after an upgrade at 3C and/or D at the deadline.

I don't see why Vegas would give up Karlsson for just a 2nd. He's probably their best shot at a scoring line center and is makin a mil for another year before becoming an RFA. Eakin is far more likely and I'm not sure he's any better than Bonino and makes similar money.

Vegas is going to be bad enough for long enough to where they'd take any high picks for almost any player on their roster I think. I think the only exceptions would probably be guys like Theodore.

I really don't see Sheary playing on the 4th line or Hornqvist playing with Crosby to be completely honest. I think the Crosby with Hornqvist ship has sailed at this point, Sheary's his first RW and Rust is his 2nd RW.

So whichever one of you mofo's closed the last one should've started a new one...lazy, lazy, haha.

Sully went back to it in the playoffs (Hornqvist with Sid) but maybe it'll just be in the playoffs.

Hornqvist only played with Crosby for like 2 games in the playoffs, like games 1 and 2 against Washington but that's about it. Rust was Crosby's most common RW followed by Sheary.

The only way GMGM could have been more obvious about his intentions for the first few years of Vegas as an NHL team is if he bought one of those giant neon signs with "we are going to tank for picks" on it... its utterly shameful with what the NHL granted them...

I think you can get any player who isn't controlled for a long time off of their roster for a price...
