I think if a deal if happening between the Penguins and Senators, it's going to include at least a couple of Rust, Sheary, Smith and Pageau. I don't think Letang to Ottawa is realistic.

Not unless they get a sizeable return from Karlsson.

Karlsson out for big package. Other big package out for Letang. Unlikely but if Karlsson is not interested in resigning or Melynk doesn't want to pony up, a Letang package could be tempting.

I'm not sure about this. I think Melnyk would rather have the Senators suck and not have to pay an injury risk in Letang rather than have Letang and possibly be alright.

Oh I agree, but Letang being traded is a longshot in general. I can see Melnyk dealing Karlsson and needing to replace him with something, especially if his recent sabre-rattling about the team is to be believed, however.

Seen this in the trade thread, I'd be all over it.

Trade with the Habs

Hags, Simon, Lauzon, 18' top 10 protected 1st round pick(if the pick ends up being a top 10 one it becomes an unprotected 2019 1st round pick.)

for

Alex Galchenyuk

I think it would be enough with out the 1st round pick, that's over kill for Galchenyuk. IF they want that first too, I want Scherbak added to that trade, then JR can move Sheary for some C depth as well.

What is he though? A skilled winger which we don’t need? A centre where he doesn’t play at the moment and is unproven?

Sure you take the deal (just to get rid of Hags contract)then trade him for something we need but doesn’t usually work like that in the NHL.

Bonus if it’s a shoulder injury.

More like...

"Perfect if it's/or..."

A broken orbital bone.
A workout machine falls on you (sorry Straka)
You get a concussion.
You have a LBI.
You have an UBI.
You have a shoulder injury.
You have a broken foot.
You have a broken hand.
You have a broken thumb.
You are dying of a broken heart...oh wait, wrong thread.

And I think Ottawa would rather pay neither 7.25M for Letang nor 12M for Karlsson precisely because they're that cheap.

One very intriguing name has surfaced out of Pittsburgh: Kris Letang, who won’t play Wednesday against Columbus and is listed as day-to-day with a lower-body injury. Letang’s got four years left at $7.25 million. The theory is that the Penguins need to free up cap space, and they did win without him last season. The other thing to remember is that GM Jim Rutherford is fearless, unafraid to make an informed gamble.

It hasn’t been an easy season for Letang, who selflessly took ownership for a critical mistake in Pittsburgh’s final pre-Christmas game, a 4-0 home loss to Anaheim, but there is not a ton of concern about his ability. He’s good, and everyone knows it. What makes this tricky is his health history — which includes a stroke and concussions, among other injuries. Letang’s seen several doctors/specialists outside the Penguins’ prism, so you’d have to assume any interested opponent would want access to that information. Therefore, the big question is going to be: Is this too complex for an in-season deal?

I agree with Friedman's conclusion here, I think it's way too difficult to move someone with Letang's cap hit in season, let alone someone with Letang's injury history. Friedman also mentions Detroit and Montreal as making sense for Letang.

More from the 31 thoughts:

I think there is also concern in Pittsburgh with the toll so much hockey has taken on Carl Hagelin. He’s a tough competitor, but no one has played more playoff games since 2012. Add that to 453 regular-season games, the Olympics and the World Cup over that span, it’s a lot.

This site is absurdly annoying when posting links to some places. It's Friedman's 31 thoughts, this site isn't letting me post the link.

Friedman talking about Letang's health issues making it too complicated to trade him mid season makes no sense. Do medical records some how get more reliable in June?

That item screams rival GM trying to talk down Letang's value because he thinks JR will blink on price to make a move now.

yeah...that ones not gonna happen...popped in to see if there was talk about letting..curious about him, but chuckys so under rated on these boards its gross...kid can be close to a PPG player, he was clipping along at that pace last year before his injury for about 30 games, he's scored 30, he's producing at a PPG right now over the last dozen or so and doing beautiful things with the puck...sorry:(
but what would guys be looking for for letang you think?
