Rosters don't change that much between July 10 and September.

Even if the Oilers sign like Vanek ... I still think those rankings stay about the same.

Even if the Oilers sign Ferlund, the needle doesn't move much.

It sure hurts when they would have had 3 years term left in a summer where the cap is usable on quality players.

Vancouver was already better than the Oilers a year ago and added 3 solid players + are getting Hughes on the back end.
Even if we add Vanek, Brassard and Boyle our year will really be banking on guys taking that next step.

It's not like the dude is 32 years old. 4 year term on a 27 year old who can pop 20 goals for 3.5 million is a very acceptable contract.

What do you think by waiting a year you're getting someone way better for equal money. Yeah that might be a sobering wake up call.

This team doesn't have anyone big that's going to "take the next step" and really impact anything.

Caleb Jones can maybe play the bottom pairing without drowning, the forward prospect pool is kinda ass.

Ferlund has "popped 20" once in his career. The Oilers have 25 million in cap space next year, they have $3.9M in cap space now. Their bad contracts are all more managable. There is no world were giving a middling 2/3line player term now makes more sense than budget shopping for a shorter term, 15-20 goal option and having tons of cap space in a year where the cap is projected to be flat again.

And who are they getting a year from now at 3.5 million that has a similar impact on the game? Probably someone who is about as good as .... (gasp) Ferland or worse.

Like the Oilers sitting on their hands a year ago when Hoffman was available for peanuts, how much would like to have him on the roster right about now?

His inactivity has cost the Oilers a lot of games in July.

Historically, most offseason trades, free agent signings are done within the first 2-3 weeks of July. We’re likely looking at our team for next year, with the possibility of a minor signing or PTOs.

Nonsense. What do you think the Oilers position would have in a year where so many teams were capped up if they had literally three times the flexibility they did? Do you think they don't come up on Wayne Simmonds, who they bid for and didn't get because New Jersey went into the 5's? Do you think they're completely sitting out the mid-tier UFA market because they literally can't work that?

Your sad sack shtick is cringe-worthy. Why don't you just go do something else with your time?

Oilers are going to set history next year by being the most incompetent team 5 years into a generational player's career.

Even the Penguins with Mario Lemieux had started to figure it out by now and added top end help like Paul Coffey.

This has never been done before what the Oilers are doing.

True. Were actually worse than last year somehow.
How are we worse ? Who have we lost that we haven’t replaced that makes us a worse team ? Sekera who didn’t play much of the season due to injuries or maybe reider and JP because they created a lot of offence. If anything I’d say we’re pretty much the same maybe a slight better but not enough to make much of a difference.

There are some useful FAs still out there. Holland has mentioned addressing other needs through trade.

He's not doing anything unusual from what he said was going to happen. The people who expected him to come and make a quick fix are going to be disappointed.

Except they will actually have the cap space to get into that, unlike now. You know how they wouldn't? Signing a player like Ferlund to 4 year contracts.

Ferland reportedly has had concussion issues which might be why he is still available at this late date.
He wants a longer term deal and he appears to be a risky player to take on long term at any price.

Perhaps he would consider a 1 year deal. The Oilers only need to be competitive this season and get themselves to next season when they will have all kinds of cap space.
Then Holland can really get something accomplished.

If I'm the Oilers and this is where money for Ferland is I give an offer to Dzingle 1yr $5M, and then move pieces to make that fit.

Any decent high prized UFA's for next July?

Well, it's a huge list now but most of them won't make it there. Names to look at if your the Oilers: Taylor Hall, Jared Spurgeon.

Simply having cap space in the offseason in a year where the cap is projected to be flat puts you in a position to pull from other teams at low cost.
