I think they’d even roll the dice on a young guy like Lagesson or a Kahun type over Klefbom. Klefbom is too big a question mark and you only get one pick per team.
They can pick up a Lagesson or Kahun via waivers. Oilers will protect Klefbom because after Nurse and Bear there is no other NHL regular Dman worth protecting.

I think Jujhar would get protected over Kahun. Possibly Kass too.

I think Holland adds a protection worthy forward or 2 before exp draft. He would wish Kraken takes Kasssian and his salary.
He might protect Khaira over Kahun though if he doesnt add anyone else

I would 100% pick Klefbom if I were Seattle and he were exposed. I don’t understand the willingness for some people to leave him exposed. He’s a top 2 defensemen when heathy and unless management has some very inside info that is not worth the risk giving up

He's also a 60-game player when 'healthy' which is a large reason for the willingness. He's essentially been a crutch for the Oilers to not acquiring a top-dman. And then he gets hurt for a month or so and the team collapses. But then he's healthy again at the start of the next season. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Now that he's finally out of the picture we were forced to get Barrie and the team was arguably the best it's been in years.

Meh... I prefer...

I remember when the Oilers twitter account used this picture a few years back with a caption like "Happy Canada Day!" and it was like I had popped a Cialis.

Seriously, it's like looking into the future.

Jones and Hamilton are both proven top pair #1 caliber d-men.

Parayko has essentially been a 2nd pair guy his entire career playing behind Pietrangelo. Then Pietrangelo left and it was all "Parayko gonna be #1 guy this year" and instead of Parayko being the #1 guy it was Faulk taking that role over.

Not saying he couldn't if given the opportunity, but it's not like he's a young d-man anymore with tonnes of room to grow his game. By the time he's a UFA he'll be 29 years old. I can't help but feel he gets overrated around here because he's from the area.

Nurse - Parayko would be better than any D pairing we've had in 15 years

100% this. The Oilers have two other defensemen under contract worth protecting right now: Nurse and Bear. I know a lot of people here like Jones but Tippett doesn’t because he hasn’t shown enough consistency to earn that. Lagesson is a solid defender who I’m a fan of but he’s a 6/7 who can easily be replaced/upgrades like what happened this year with Koekkoek. The only way it even becomes a debate is if they sign Larsson early, but it seems like it’d be a pretty easy sell to get him to hold off on signing so they can keep his buddy Klef around.

You don’t play the will Seattle take the risk with a guy who’s been your best defender for the last 5 years to protect a guy like Jones.

Nurse - Barrie was better than any pairing we'd had in 15 years. Low bar.

Between the three, Hamilton is the more established top pairing option. But he's likely getting $8m on a long-term deal. It's a tough fit.

I'm not arguing that Parayko's better than Jones or Hamilton, cause I probably can't.

Sounds like he was riddled with injury this past campaign, and yeah, he's not getting younger. Even if he stopped progressing, he's a solidly built 6'6 RHD that can play in all situations and has been a gamer in the postseason, our backend could use him. No doubt he gets some St. Albert shine, but it also leaves the impression he's more obtainable than other "options".

Also, been some Blues fans on here giving the vibes that Parayko may want to leave and come home next year. Seems to just be speculation from the fans FWIW.

Well if that's the case then I think you look hard at Parayko and Tank this offseason. Rumour/Friedman said he's available for the right price.

Florida's another possible trade destination. Some interesting depth options if they need to free up some cap and open up a few roster spaces.

Frank Vatrano and Noel Acciari are some bottom six options that could possibly shake loose.

He'd look unreal with Nurse. The pressure would really come off of the second pairing.

Agreed on these two. Great hustle and talent.

I was drawn to the Panthers after reading this article. They're pretty tight to the cap as is.

The Hockey Writers Edmonton Oilers Could See Keith Yandle as This Year's Tyson Barrie 1 week ago

I won't lie. It's an interesting idea. But for me to even consider taking on Yandle's contract, it'd have to be dollar in/dollar out with one of Kassian or Neal going back the other way.

There's a significant Tippett connection there, so it's probably not out of the realm of possibility.

Jones has been on a decline the last two years.

Parayko has kind of stalled in his development.

The best hockey option might be Hamilton, but it also might be the hardest option to accomplish.

It would you're right.

Jones and Hamilton are both better d-men though imo.

I mean... I'm acting like any are realistically attainable. I'd gladly take any of them if presented the opportunity.
