No, people are really overhyping Bouchard. The guy has played like 20 games in the NHL. Assuming he will step right in and seamlessly replace someone who led the league in defenseman scoring is a gamble so risky it borders on insanity.

That Barrie's contract ask isn't even unreasonable only makes the Oilers look even more silly.
Barrie is awful defensively...

I think there are better ways to spend the 5 mil then on Barrie. Rather go cheaper on a RHD then spend more on forward depth.

Bouchard has a better shot and is a better passer than Barrie.

Barrie has never been good defensively. They are very similar players.

So why not put Bouchard with Nurse then. One costs you nothing.

Ya, I agree. Let Barrie walk. I would rather spend the money on a goalie, or another forward. Barrie adds little. Bouchard needs to be given a chance.

I like Bouchard a lot as a prospect. The oilers had many more chances to play him last year and didn't which was a mistake.

The thought that he is going to waltz right in and provide what barrie did is naive.

Barrie is not good defensively.....who cares, that is not his job his job is to score and drive offense which he did perfectly last year.

All I can say is that if we do move on from Barrie, Bouchard better be given those minutes immediately. I am sure the oilers will bring in some jag vet though that tippet takes a liking to and Bouchard will have to 'earn the minutes'

Martinook 2 years @ 1.5 M
Hamonic 1 year @ 2 M
Ullmark 3 years @ 3.5 M
= total $19 M

Dump Koskinen

Some nice thoughts. But if it's bribe Getzlaf out of So Cal bliss it is likely $3.5-$4 for three year security contract.

I would take a run at Ritchie to add some size and physicality.

EDIT: The Oilers aren't winning or likely competing for a Cup next year so a one year deal likely doesn't incentive Getlaf to uproot his life and country nor really move the needle for Edmonton.

Well that's a better offer than the 5.5 that was rumored a few days ago.

McKinnon signed his deal when he was putting up 20g 50p seasons.

Landeskog signed his 5.5 when he put up a 26g 65p.

Rantanen scored 29g and 84p chiseled a 9.25 aav.

So now Landeskog has put up comparable numbers to Rantanen's, but is being told he's still only worth equivalent to a 20g 50p...lol

And he's the team captain

This negotiating is crazy.

Nurse was a UFA at the end of this deal, if he/she wanted to leave, they could have in a year.

My concern with this is it takes him right up to the end of the McDavid deal.

If we don't start winning playoff series, and soon, it's all going to go tits up on us.

That was the case either way.

There is no "Oilers can goof around for 4-5 years and have no consequences" option.

The Oilers 1st round picks in 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, probably at minimum 2/5 of those will have to be traded.

Putting him on the bottom pairing and heavy pp time is the Jultz method?
That's not what he suggested, but still, yes. Inflating his offensive stats is how you end up with defensively inept $5m+ defenseman on his second contract.

To me a couple of those guys are a down grade on defense compared to Larsson and Barrie. Our defense will almost certainly be worse than last year. Hope I'm wrong. Last season our defense was fine. Not enough depth scoring from lines 2-4 is what killed us in the playoffs.

Agreed about the bottom 6.

I wouldn't say Savard is much of a downgrade from Larsson, but yes a downgrade. Barrie is not a net positive defensive player on D. He's a PP specialist and a transition expert. He struggles in his own zone and often gets beat on the half wall. I think our D will be relatively the same if we can get Savard.

The big key is since Larsson left we have no choice but to make a splash for a Goalie.

The 20-21 defence was also supposed to be a downgrade on 19-20 with Klefbom gone. Didn't happen. Oilers GA continued to decline.

I used Seattle's contract with Driedger as a comparable. I could see him getting more if he wants.

If I were the GM, I would run with that the D to start the season. Close to the trade deadline, I would make another move for a D (Giordnao, Leddy, Lindholm, Ekholm).

I'm just really concerned about Samorukov. I didn't watch any of Bako last year so I'm basing my whole opinion on NHLe charts but it looks like he struggled at the AHL level.

For those that have been talking about the Jultz style of player development, this seems like the closest comparable to me.

7x7 should have been on the table from the get go. Landeskog is the captain and the voice of the team, the enforcer and the glue of the team. Those guys don't come cheap.
Honestly it seems like there has been so many offers out there. Not sure which ones are accurate and which ones aren't at this point

So you hold him back and stunt his growth in hopes he isn't very good so you don't have to pay him?
