.920 is always a sweet spot for starting goalies...Carter of course is exceeding that avg!

I think it was from ~2010-2018... where the league average was .912-.915.

But this year average is .908, back to 07-09, 97-03 levels.

Where .915 sv%+ made you an above average starter, .920 sv% made you top ~8-10 in the league.

I mean, Hart is 8th of the 60 goalies in the NHL amongst goalies with 12+ games played.

And of the 32 goalies with 25+ games played the median sv% is .912!

Which all makes his sv% even more impressive.

No, because the pressure of the AHL is much lower than the NHL. And the Phantoms were a good enough AHL team to stay well above .500, even with their starter at .900.

Really, you think if he starts the season in the NHL he struggles, loses his confidence and never plays well? Don't be ridiculous. He would have outplayed all the other Flyers goalies even through his adjustment period and be in exactly the same spot he is in now - dominating.

I would've loved to see Hart start the year here, but I'm in the camp that doesn't think starting in the AHL was that big of a deal. I'm pretty sure it helped let him get some familiarity with the type of competition.

It depends so much on era.

But since the lockout statistically, for starters:

Borderline elite (top 10): .910 sv%

06-09:

Decent/ok (average starter): .910 sv%
Pretty good (above average): .914 sv%
Borderline elite (top 10): .917 sv%

09-14:

Decent/ok (average starter): .915 sv%
Pretty good (above average): .917 sv%
Borderline elite (top 10): .920 sv%

14-16:

Decent/ok (average starter): .918 sv%
Pretty good (above average): .920 sv%
Borderline elite (top 10): .922 sv%

16-18:

Decent/ok (average starter): .915 sv%
Pretty good (above average): .917 sv%
Borderline elite (top 10): .920 sv%

18-19:

Decent/ok (average starter): .914 sv%
Pretty good (above average): .916 sv%

I never really thought .920 was considered that good, but damn, if Hart is already pulling that number out.

I get why, Vezina finalists are usually up at ~.930...

but generally the ~10th best statistical starter in the league is only *just* at .917sv%-.921sv%, has been like that for 11 of the last 14 seasons.

10th best starter (48%+ games played) in each season:

05-06: Martin Brodeur (.911 sv%)
06-07: Henrik Lundqvist (.917 sv%)
07-08: Tomas Voukoun (.919 sv%)
08-09: Henrik Lundqvist (.916 sv%)
09-10: Jonas Hiller (.918 sv%)
10-11: Antti Niemi (.920 sv%)
11-12: Henrik Lundqvist (.920 sv%)
12-13: Sergei Bobrovsky (.923 sv%)
13-14: Henrik Lundqvist (.920 sv%)
14-15: Semyon Varmalov (.921 sv%)
15-16: Marc-Andre Fleury (.921 sv%)
16-17: Cam Talbot (.919 sv%)
17-18: Devan Dubnyk (.918 sv%)
18-19: Casey DeSmith (.917 sv%)

Hart played two months in the AHL, and when he was called up to the NHL he has played well under Scott Gordon.

Your assumptions about how he would have played in the NHL under Dave Hakstol with the league's worst PK in front of him and with no chance to get acclimated to pro hockey at a lower level are just that, assumptions.

The changes in pads has brought down S%, be interesting to see how it impacted different styles and types of goalies, my suspicion is that it was tougher on the big goalies who with large pads could just cover a large portion of the net without great mobility.

It'll be interesting to see how Stolarz plays the rest of the season (and Lyon in the AHL, I think he wasn't 100% in Philly, he's been lights out the last couple months, picking up on his playoff performance last year - and AHL playoffs are good indicators of NHL success for goalies).

Obviously Hart is the starter next year, but if one of these guys shows enough, Fletcher can focus on other positions instead of adding another veteran retread (b/c no starter caliber veteran is coming here to play 25-30 games).

Hart and Stol are going to be the heart and soul of this team for a long time.
