I think even the Rangers would acknowledge that he can't do offense at all at this point, but I'm willing to venture that everyone in the organization sees him as a shutdown stalwart.

I didn't think so, but that being said... he could probably play LD in Hartford and look alright too. That statement has as much value as saying he did it in pre-season.

What I'm bringing up is position. If a righty plays the left side, I have no problem with that nor vice versa. But LD and RD are two different positions the same way the LW and RW are, but D are even less interchangeable than wingers.

Then allow me to rephrase: I prefer a RD who has never played LD in his life at LD over Marc Staal.

Staal is not an NHL player at this point. An NHL RD at LD > a non-NHL LD at LD.
