Samardzija is a 2.5-3.0war guy who's had most of his success in the NL signed until age 35.

Price is a 6war AL East guy signed until he's 36.

Price is the deal to fret over, not Shark.

Buehrle/Romero/Izturis 2015 - $31m, 1 roster spot
Price/Craig/Castillo 2016 - $50m, likely 1 roster spot

I can play this game too.

ben cherington was a risk-diversifying idiot, no argument from me there.

That's a brilliant example of how giving Price would leave the Blue Jays zero room for underperformance or injury from the balance of the roster.

Who under performed last year? Reyes maybe, Colabello in left? We also didn't have any long term injuries that really handicapped us for a long period of time.

Year long injuries to Stroman, Saunders, Travis (and i guess izturis)

Underperformance from Hutch, Reyes, Buehrle, Navarro, Loup, Pompey, Norris.

How tragic? On a scale of 1 to Whitey Ford being knocked unconscious by a barrage of pretzels.

At least forty rods to the hogshead.

Eh

Stroman/Travis definitely

- Saunders/Pompey being hurt and bad let Pillar get an everyday spot which was a complete net positive for the team (and the Jays obviously filled the hole with Revere)
- Hutch was bad but got bailed out by the offense
- Reyes isn't around anymore (and played to his true talent level)
- If anything Buehrle overperformed IMO
- Navarro was as expected
- Loup was our...7th reliever? That's like saying Josh Thole underperformed
- Pompey/Norris are both young and should be expected to have some struggles

The Jays were 21st in the league (1st = bad) in games lost to injury last year, and lost about 170 games less than the median/mean. They definitely caught some breaks last year.

Flip side - according to this, the Jays did lose the 2nd most WAR to injury, but it looks like a majority of that's based on Stroman projected for a full season of 7.25 WAR which is quite unrealistic to me.
