@amymoritz - I’ll be there for the opener on Friday when they play the Conachers, er, the Syracuse Crunch.

Veterans, Prospects, Culture, and Conachers. What you need to know for tonight's Amerks opener:

1. The Amerks Want To Instill A Winning Culture. While the playoff drought in Rochester isn't as pronounced as it is for the parent Buffalo Sabres, the Amerks are looking to make the postseason for the first time since 2014. Since then they've endured three losing seasons. And the six-time Calder Cup champions haven't advanced past the first round of the playoffs since 2005. While minor league hockey is often focused on development and depth, all in service of the parent club, winning can be a big part of that development.

"Once you become a team then everyone does well and everyone has success," new Amerks head coach Chris Taylor said. "I think that's the way we've got to approach it and the players have to approach it, because you can't do it by yourself. Especially the way we want to do it in this organization, it has to be as a team. If you don't play as a team, then it's not going to work for you as an individual. That's our whole culture. That's how we're going to do it. That's what it's all about.

Tonight's Game - The Rochester Americans open their 62nd American Hockey League season - and 36th as the primary affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres - tonight at 7:05 pm ET against the Syracuse Crunch in the front-end of a home-and-home series Friday at The Blue Cross Arena. Tonight’s matchup will be carried LIVE on the Sports Leader 95.7 FM/950 AM ESPN Rochester.

Let's Get Reacquainted - As the Amerks and Crunch are set to begin their respective seasons, there are several former players on each club that played for the opposition. @CincyCyclones -

The Cincinnati Cyclones, proud ECHL affiliate of the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Rochester Americans and the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Buffalo Sabres, have announced that forward Justin Vaive has been signed to a Standard Player Contract (SPC) for the 2017-2018 season.

Vaive has had three previous stints in Cincinnati back in 2011-2012 and 2012-2013, and he appeared in one game with the Cyclones last season. In 60 career ECHL games with the Cyclones and Greenville Road Warriors, Vaive accounted for 18 goals and 22 assists for 40 points, along with 95 minutes in penalties.

Drafted by Anaheim in the fourth round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Vaive appeared in 66 games for the ahl's Rochester Americans in 2016-2017, totaling three goals and six assists in addition to 90 minutes in penalties. He enjoyed a successful 2016-16 campaign with the AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers, accounting for 11 goals and 17 assists along with 79 penalty minutes in 63 games played.

His most productive season in terms of points came in 2014-15 with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack. In 62 games that season, the Buffalo, NY, native racked up 32 points (14g, 18a) and 94 penalty minutes. Overall, Vaive has accounted for 58 points (28g, 30a) in 208 AHL games played between the Sound Tigers, Wolf Pack, and San Antonio Rampage.

I thought they played pretty decent. The defense was more composed than last season, that’s for sure. Ullmark played well. Bailey could’ve had 3 more, but he’s got to be the worst finisher since Milan Bartovic. Baptiste was invisible most of the night. Guhle seemed nervous or something, very unsure of himself. Moses has a quick shot and looks dangerous.

The offense just never sustained any pressure like last season. Hopefully Nylander, Malone and Rodrigues helps when they get healthy.
