You’re saying Veleno didn’t dominate in juniors this year at almost 2 PPG?
That why I posted the stats page. 2 PPG in the +1 year is good, but it's not elite.

Keep in mind Mantha was also 2PPG player in the Q. I expect Veleno to be good, not elite. Guess it depends on your definition of elite, but I doubt Veleno hits 1 PPG in the NHL.

Edit (add): He had 2 ppg for the second half of the season, not the whole season, and was 1 ppg in the playoffs. If he was dominant, he should be able to carry a team, which he couldn't do at St John.

seems like you confused their draft years with their d+1 years..Veleno did carry that St Johns team, that´s why he finished as their fifth best scorer while playing only 31 games..and he was hovering between 1,9 and 2,0 ppg for the larger part of his d+1 season (2018/19), only to fall to 1,76 ppg in March, when rumours started to surface that he was playing with a leg injury (had only 1 multipoint game in 8 March games)

You really consider 6 goals in 31 games as carrying a team? Or 17 pts in 16 playoffs games in the juniors?

More power to you bud.

It just sounds like Veleno slapped a beer out of your hand and you’re angry at him, so you make him out to seem like some pedestrian player.

Is he Crosby? No. Could he be elite? Sure. Will he be elite? Who knows.

Just kick your feet up and appreciate that you have something to be excited about for once. Maybe he makes it, maybe he doesn’t, but I can promise you it’s more enjoyable to be optimistic than it is pessimistic.

I think we should wait and see how Veleno transitions to pro hockey. I like him a great deal, but I don't think he is getting better than Larkin and frankly if we draft a center in this draft he slots back to a 2nd/3rd line tweener ala Filppula in my opinion. We shall see. I like a lot about Veleno, but I don't like heaping tons of expectations on him.

I will say if Veleno did wind up a star then we are pretty much there up front. Larkin is a #1C, if Veleno gave us a second #1C then look out, we really are just fixing the D and Trouba/Karlsson hunting along with finding a future goalie. That second big time center down the middle would be a look out for us were back kind of moment in my opinion. That is still probably three years away at least, but that would be great. Just not necessarily my expectation for him. Would love to see him outkick his coverage like Larkin though in development.

2 ppg season d+1 season..check
100+points and 40+goals..check

but..but..but..ah, only 6 goals in 2017..

You`re really grasping at straws here to make it fit your narrative, aren`t you, bud?

Don't get me wrong, I think he's gonna be a good player, just tempering the expectations. We go through this EVRY freakin' year, overhyping the prospects expecting them to be superstars. Mantha was more dominant than Veleno, remember the Mantha hype?

My expectation is that he becomes a solid 2C. We can revisit this in 3 or 4 years, because we won't know who's right until then.

don`t worry, I`m not expecting Veleno to set the world aflame come next October..he`s got things to prove in the AHL and we certainly won`t be able to evaluate his impact earlier than the 3-4 years, probably later..just being cautiosly optimistic, because he proved what he needed to prove in the CHL

He’s trending like someone who could be a good 2nd line center. Not elite, though, but a quality top 6 player.

Guys are on my some kind of mutual potential/NHL hitting probability order.

They are adding the kid core here and there.

There's really hard push for those right-handed defencemen.
Is Lindstrom really behing Kotkinsalo on the depth chart? or even? or?

Mantha is much more unidimensional than Veleno. Veleno may never be a 1C, but he can be slotted in many different positions. Best yet, he has drive.

I won't argue with that, I was asked why I don't think he'll be elite. We could be wrong, he may wind up being 1C, but damn, if he winds up being better than Larkin I'd gladly eat crow.

Easier to split those guys as skill and worker type of players. That's the usual build for lines, so you could vision potential future combinations better.

Ethan Philips is the only right-handed forward prospect of this group. Getting Elite right-handed skill winger or center (from 2020 draft) would help a lot with future handnesses.

Seems to be that Yzerman is drawing the "age" line on that point.

Or, more likely, it is a coincidence. AA's time in Detroit was done, no matter his age.

Mantha was signed to be a long term piece with the expectation he'd continue taking steps forward. He did not continue taking steps forward.

Yep.

But cutting 2 years of winger at same scale is very smart move. Vrana's prime will be later than Mantha's, and that will match to our core.

Alex Cotton is very interesting RhD. He is producing over a point-per-game in WHL, in a very crap team. Not carried by any huge forward talent, like typically some scoring defenceman has.
