Not much left to sign both TOP4 defenceman and TOP6 forward. Alfie is there as an 3.0M example for that TOP6 guy. You aren't getting any TOP6 guy for cheaper than him and that would leave only 4.8M capspace for a defenceman. I don't know would that be enough for even Boyle.

My RFA estimates could be too lucrative and some space would open there.

- DeKeyser 3.0M
- Tatar 2.5M
- Sheahan 1.5M

yeah it will be tight.

i say no thanks to alfie if it means red wings sign big UFA fish and can't unload kindl.

Plan B should be Jurco, if Alfie won't get extended.

Or sign Alfie with heavy bonuses to get under the cap, but trade Kindl later to make room to avoid the bonus overage.

Khan reported they expect 9-10 million in cap space just a day or so ago.

Additionally, Kindl seems very moveable, even if it's just for a late draft pick.

Also, Jurco could very well start the year on the team. They made some comments at the end of the season that made it sound like he will be.

DeKeyser and Sheahan look good, I doubt Tatar gets 2.5M though. Maybe trade Kindl to Buffalo with a draft pick for a pick to clear some space.

Here's a shocking and novel proposition: Trade a roster player to make space.

The obvious solution is to waive Andy and trade Kindl for futures. That gives you 7.9 to sign a top FA defenseman. Plenty.

If they are expecting $9 to $10 million, then that would mean they are likely to move Kindl. If you subtract Alfie's contract from the OP (he's a UFA anyway) and Kindl's, that gets the Wings in the $10 million range.

They have room to make one large acquisition ($6 million cap hit or so) and then a mid-level UFA addition in the $3 to $4 million cap range.

Like others have said, could always trade something like Kindl + 5th to [team looking to hit cap floor] for future considerations, though that doesn't seem like a Holland kind of move.

Could waive Andersson, Callahan, Lashoff, etc. to open up another ~3/4 million.

I know we rag on Holland for not being bold, but he is one of the few GMs who hasn't looked like a total clown at managing the cap so far.

That's pretty much what I thought our RFA would get Dekeyser around 3.0M Tatar around 2.5M and Sheahan around 1.5M but with the cap dropping to 69M I'm not so sure that they will get that much but we shall see.

Sorry just noticed this, but why does Kindl make 2.4mil?

Because he signed that deal when if looked like he was turning the corner. To be fair, it looked like the deal would be a steal in its 4th year at least, maybe sooner. It still might, I just don't want Kindl doing his soul searching here. We don't have time for yet another defenseman trying to find his head out there.

Except last year when we had neither cap space or roster room to call up Nyquist.

That was easily avoidable, though. Any of us could have avoided it. Just don't sign Cleary and last season is just another close-to-the-cap-but-still-have-wiggle-room kinda year. I meant more like having use the CBOs on guys on year 2 or 3 of 7 or 8 year deals worth ~$50M, or trading away guys for less than market value because they have albatross contracts. The Cleary thing last year sucked, but it was only for like 2 months, and we still made the playoffs. We aren't hurting for years to come because of it.

Am I the only one thinking Tatar gets moved? Or they let another team offersheet him?

I really thought that if he was going to go, it would be something like Tatar + 15th overall for Myers or Bogosian/ Byfuglien at the draft. Not so sure now, seems like he should return.

I guess.

We did use 2 of our "get out of jail free" cards already though (CBO), and both on free agents we signed in 2012.

There have been some news articles point to him wanting around 3 million, and that he feels he deserves it based on his play and if the Wings don't give it to him he will go somewhere else.

Both of those guys were on the last years of their deals, and they were sub $3M cap hits. I'm talking CBOing Brad Richards, CBOing Vinny Lecavalier, trading Garrison for a 2nd, etc.

edit: although I don't defend those signings. I'm right there with you that summer 2012 was hilariously sad. I am just happy the team isn't weighed down with numerous albatross contracts. Franzen's is looking pretty bad, but $4M isn't a ton, and I'm assuming he will still be good for 25 goals for a few more seasons.

I bet Kenny will shave some hundred thousands off those RFA deals, no arbitrations to worry about. Especially Sheahan I don't see why he would get more than Nyquist got last summer. And as Alfie will likely be an August signing, they can sign a defenseman first and worry about Alfie later(could take a lower base, more bonus).
