Since the Colts acquired Joseph Blandisi, Athanasiou has been playing wing.
I actually prefer him on wing. Not because of what he can't do, but because of what he can. He loves flying down the wing and is very good at working the puck along the half wall. As a winger, he's better defensively as mistakes (like blowing his coverage or taking too long to read the play) tend to happen less often. I feel like wing works his strengths and hides his weaknesses. But the versatility is a great thing to have, especially the pro level. When he turns pro, he might become a centre as the more structured system might benefit him.
As for faceoffs I can't really say. OHL doesn't publish their faceoff stats and Athanasiou doesn't particularly shine in the dot. Even when he did play centre, quite often one of the wingers would take the draw.
Really valuable stuff, thanks for coming over to shed some light on Athanasiou.
Always appreciate fans of junior teams giving opinions on our prospects, since many of us don't have the chance to watch these guys as often as we'd like.
