What happened Kenny, Samuelsson & Quincey said no?

No to any veteran signings at this point. Let Green walk, and convince Kronwall to hang it up already. Need more youth to gain real experience in this rebuild, for once.

Its honestly not a bad move if he just signs one of them. If they have an even half-way decent season then they could be flipped for at least a 3rd round pick at the deadline (just like Holland has done previously). Everyone wants to see the prospects get more playing time, but there are a few open slots and not actually that many NHL ready prospects on the team.

Perhaps they want to sign Vanek to a one year deal with the goal of flipping him at trade deadline.
Either they're used as trade bait at the deadline or they're part of the solution for a playoff team. It only hurts if they're stalling the progress of a young player with real potential.

There's nothing wrong with signing guys like Vanek or Filppula on a rebuilding team. Particularly Vanek, as he'll probably be worth something at the deadline and you need to actually ice a team. Filppula is pretty close to the end of the line though.

I'm just skeptical that Holland really wants to rebuild and isn't trying to compete.

People are saying this is for flipping at the TDL, but, Vanek never returns much, and Fil isn't worth much. Why bother? I'd rather not have a couple extra thirds and know if Ras and Zadina are ready for the big show, than to have them slightly reduce Detroit's chances at a top 3 picks and block kids from playing for a couple meh picks.

The blind hate and misinformed along with the trolls are quite pathetic. So many of you need to grow up.

Vanek and Flip have no bearing on whether or not the young players play, or where the direction the team goes.

Along with the fact that a great player and captain Zetterberg may be retiring is a big reason for this. This is the same talk that Datsyuk had before he retired. I expect Z to be gone.

It’s also hilarious that some people believe the Wings are worse off than the Habs. Good one.

AA and Vanek had good chemistry. AA is the #1 trade rumor when it comes the Wings. If Vanek helps boost AA's numbers it could give the Wings a better return if they decide to trade AA. We also have Nyquist as a likely TDL asset and Vanek could act as short-term replacement for Nyquists scoring.
Probably a lot Vanek can teach Rasmussen about playing around the net too.

Asset management.

[Lesson]

UFAs are free assets. When you sign free assets, you can trade other team assets for futures.

That's rebuilding.

Signing UFAs is rebuilding in Red Wings case. Team will be bad in any case. These players are not difference makers like everybody knows. But they enable another trades. Not necessarily themselves.

Calling Ken Holland stupid or idiot manager or whatever tell more about the writer than about Ken Holland.

‘Free assets’ that lessen Detroit’s chances at drafting elite talent aren’t free assets as they have an inherent opportunity cost. The 3rd round pick Detroit potentially gets (and don’t take for granted that Detroit WILL get a pick at the TDL, reference the Green situation last season if you need evidence) isn’t worth the difference between drafting 6th instead of 5th. Let alone if the Detroit finished 10th instead of 4th worst. So in the end those assets aren’t free and worse yet, they are actually really expensive, being that the assets that Detroit is eyeballing are low return assets that will cost the team more than they will earn.

Once you’ve signed him, we’ll show you some stats of players with Flip and without him. Dont want to put anyone off.

Admittedly Filpula is really really bad these days. He isn't going to make us any better. In fact he'll almost certainly be a detriment everytime he steps on the ice. So if we could move him at the deadline for assets I wouldn't be against signing him. No one will want him though and the Wings would be giving his spot to prospects.
