jimmys a good goalie maybe top 15 in the league but 6 or 7 years is a bad deal and a big problem waiting to happen. Mrazek is already showing he has more natural talent than Jimmy, if we sign Jimmy to this long deal with likely a NMC in it. we are basically saying goodbye to Petr by the time he is 25. I would be ok with him getting a 5.5 Mil a year for 3-4 years or 6 Mil for 3 years. but if he wants a long term deal he needs to take a hometown discount. if he went for 4.25-4.75 for 6 years then at least he wouldnt be to much of a cap burden.

I'd rather have him then not have him. If this is true it looks like Mrazek will be in the AHL for the next 2 years, year 3 & 4 it'll be back up, then year 5 he'll be able to wrestle away that starting job.

He's not a $5 a year goalie unless this is a sign and trade.

Which, sadly, it's not.

It would be insane to give a semi-injury prone goalie 6+ years, let alone with that cap hit. I really hope that isn't true.

5 mill puts jimmy right around middle of the pack. Which is what he is. He is not one of the best. But not the worst. IMO There's only a few goalies in the bottom 20 that are better than jimmy. An when their current contracts are up will be due for a raise.
So 5 mill for jimmy sounds about right. However the 6 years scares me. Would like 3-4 yrs instead.

Edit. He should take a home town discount as well. Just cuz.

I'd rather have Mrazek @ 800k than Howard at 5M. No joke. When it matters, Howards suck - just check his playoff history.

Wings have never had a expensive goalie in the salary cap era, why would they want one now?

I actually think Howard is worth $5M.

Goalies are overrated in this modern NHL, if you have excellent defensemen and two-way forwards, all you need is a 800k-1.5M goalie to stop the must-have shots.

Defensemen (and two-way forwards) > Goaltender.

Put the money where it's needed, wings have terrible defensemen,

I always thought Howard should get a similar contract to Niemi. He's not worth more than Lehtonen's cap hit, but he's worth more than a Schneider or Pavelec. 4 mil just seems right.

5 mil for a long period of time is simply stupid... especially in a league where goaltenders can fall off the face of the earth.

A 7 year 35m deal for Howard would be pretty bad. I like the idea more of a 4 year 16m deal. I think Howard is replaceable.

I like Jimmy, but don't want to be married to him forever at that caphit. 4M is cool with me. Ya know they'll give him a full NTC/NMC right?

Because we don't have an abundance of pricey skaters anymore.

$4M for a goalie is middle of pack and a cap hit I would be fine with, especially considering Howard is in prime years. But I don't want him signed forever, four years would be perfectly reasonable. That way Mrazek gets a veteran to battle with for starts for a couple of years. If Mrazek is ready to be the starter you can trade Howard towards the end.

I don't buy this. Holland has always said that he wouldn't pay a goaltender much more than $4M per year, Howard hasn't exactly "wowed" this year, and the goaltending market demand simply isn't that high for non-Vezina nominees/winners.

Unless he views Howard as a top 5 goalie in the league.

4 years, $4M would be a pretty good deal.

Babcock should put Howie in there for the rest of the trip and mess with his stat line.

I think we''ll see something like 5 years, 23M or 6 years 28M -- somewhere around Kronwall money

Wow, Howard is really bleeding us if this is the case. Like most everyone else I think the term is too long, especially with Mrazek in the system.

He cannot give him a NTC/NMC if he does this or the restrictions better drop off in a big way after the first three or four years.

If Howard earns the $5 million, I'd be fine with him at that cap hit. Regardless, Detroit needs a goalie right now more than ever, and he's a much better option than anyone else the team has in their organization, at least for the next couple years. I think I'd prefer a 4 year deal at most, but it's tough to sign a player who is expecting a high salary, at that age, to a mid-term deal.
