Why MLB hasn't seriously considered contraction with the Rays is beyond me.

What a way to endear yourself to Rays fan.
that's the point tho, what Rays fans?
He has nobody to endear himself to.

No it just means MLB will get every information about the financing of the stadium, the location etc. before approving the franchise and Montreal won't start shoveling before it is approved.

right, so everyone's in the same holding pattern they've been in for years now.

Could we see a trend of MLB stadiums having similar average capacity to MLS?

Really they should other than playoffs most teams don't fill more than 60% their capacities and since so few teams make the playoffs it would be wise for 30-35k seat stadiums. Its sad as I'm 34 and can remember as a kid stadiums packed/nearly full for all but the worst teams. Now teams routinely average 25-30k. I don't think there is another baseball renaissance

Saw this on LinkedIn (there's a source for ya) from the developer, Hines. It's from the Tampa Bay Times which has a firewall. Here's the post and some renderings of the new stadium (sorry if old news).

Hines and the Tampa Bay Rays were selected to lead the transformational redevelopment of the Historic Gas Plant District in St. Petersburg.

We will be creating a city-defining, diversified and inclusive placemaking village, surrounding a state-of-the-art new Major League Baseball ballpark for the Rays.

The redevelopment will be one of the largest urban real estate developments in the U.S. over the next 15 years.

The core problem is the team is not viable for 81 openings in south Pinellas County.

Fans in Sarasota and Bradenton don't want to deal with that bridge in late afternoons during a thunderstorm. They will be willing to take I-75 into Tampa. Fans in north Pinellas also would find it an easier drive than South St Pete.

The best location without a doubt is where the Yankees currently have spring training - work out a deal where NYY moves ST to St Pete.

The Trop's Achilles hell was parking and that became apparent when the Lightning played there in the mid 90's. It just could not handle a crowd over 20,000 well.

There are NO transit options to speak of in the entire Tampa Bay region - you need a car to go to a game.
