Nice hands, yet another prospect who's game exists from the top of the circle to the net. Opportunistic scorer. Good skater, good bursts of speed but not speedy, really good at shielding the puck from defenders and along the boards, but does have balance issues at times. Was at the Leafs rookie camp last year.

Saw this over on the main board Prospect Signing thread. Couldn't find confirmation anywhere else.

I trust our amateur scouts that he was worth a chance and a contract. Based on his definitely not overpowering, if not a pretty slight built, there were other factors that contributed to his increased offensive stats this season. Can someone comment?

He is from Canada - he must be a promising hockey player. :)
Anyway, always exciting with new signings though - looking forward to the training camp already! ))

Helps being 21 playing against 16 year olds in the Q

Thats just part of it. He's played on some good teams the last few seasons. His trade to Cape Breton put him in position to get top minutes on a top team.

Loik Leveille, RHD, played on the same team, I think he's a free agent.

Fine with this. Doesn't take up one of our 50 slots. Also is best that we look to infuse Hartford with youth ... not Paille-types. Only the following year will he threaten to take up one of our 50 slots ... and that would be based on play that shows he can handle Pro hockey.

What's not to like?

JAM and Hrivik also started with an AHL contract. Who knows.

Hrivik signed with the Pack at the tail end of his last junior season. He had a tremendous playoffs and the Rangers signed him to an ELC after that. He never started a season with an AHL deal. He's always been on a two way.

Marchessault played with the Pack an entire year on an AHL deal. Girardi is another example of that.

Michael Joly in the pros

Jean-RéalRéal-Jean CouturePublished May 7, 2016

The former striker of the Rimouski Oceanic, Michael Joly, signed a first professional contract with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League farm club of the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League

The news was announced by our colleague Jean-François Plante Journal Le Droit in Ottawa. On his Twitter account, Bush says Joly signed an AHL contract guaranteed, even if he should be assigned to a team of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL).

Recall that Joly, who turned 21 on May 5 (Thursday) was a 9th round pick (# 159) of the Rimouski Oceanic draft pick in the QMJHL in 2012, was a guest player Sabres Buffalo at 2014 camp and Leafs in 2015. camp is a free agent.

Joly played three and a half seasons with the Rimouski Oceanic who traded after 21 games this season with the Screaming Eagles of Cape Breton. In total, series and seasons in the QMJHL with Rimouski and Cape Breton, it displays 268 games for 160 goals and 125 assists, 285 points 176 minutes of punishment, a differential of + 132 and 814 shots. Offering exceptional hands, 32 of his goals were power play, 21 shorthanded and 26 of his goals were game-winners.

The announcement of signing a first professional contract is another star to illuminate the firmament of the Rimouski Oceanic.

Not the biggest (or smallest player), but can generate offence, soemthing the organization could use. If he ever plays an NHL game, time will tell.

47 goals is still a great accomplishment. Only Nicolas Roy (48) had more than him in the QMJHL last season.

Including the playoffs, he had 58 goals and 104 points in 73 games. The QMJHL used to be a very offensive league, but the gap from the Q to the O and even to the W is not as big as it once was. He could turn out to be another St. Croix style perimeter player, but it's worth a shot.

Yeah the Q isn't the offense-crazy league it once was.

Why'd he never get drafted?

Offense-first smallish player who never scored that much. 29 points in 56 games, including the playoffs, leading up to his first year of draft eligibility will not get you drafted. Then he had almost 1.2 points per game, and I guess the rest of his game wasn't great or he got lucky scoring because the following year he dropped to point per game, which won't get you drafted in your last year of draft eligibility. He caught fire this year after going to Cape Breton and the Rangers must be hoping that will continue. Then again, his playoff numbers are almost identical per game to his Rimouski numbers, so maybe just a hot streak. We'll see next year in Hartford.
