The Hockey News had Lindbom as a late 2nd rounder. No. 59. He was their third goalie behind Skarek (49) and Annunen (50) and just ahead of Gravel (62).

This is interesting and probably the best argument to defend the pick. If the best goalie in the draft was projected to go at 49, and our scouts think Lindbom is the best goalie, is it really that much of a reach at 39? Even discussing this as a reach, you could argue that position matters, especially with goalies.

It's interesting.

Here are some rankings for Skarek:
2018 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #53 by HOCKEYPROSPECT.COM
2018 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #95 by FUTURE CONSIDERATIONS
2018 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #93 by MCKEEN'S HOCKEY
2018 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #2 by NHL CENTRAL SCOUTING (EU Goalies)
2018 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #56 by TSN/McKenzie

Annunen:
2018 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #132 by HOCKEYPROSPECT.COM
2018 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #93 by FUTURE CONSIDERATIONS
2018 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #98 by MCKEEN'S HOCKEY
2018 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #4 by NHL CENTRAL SCOUTING (EU Goalies)
2018 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #75 by TSN/McKenzie

Lindbom:
2018 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #137 by HOCKEYPROSPECT.COM
2018 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #259 by FUTURE CONSIDERATIONS
2018 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #91 by MCKEEN'S HOCKEY
2018 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #5 by NHL CENTRAL SCOUTING (EU Goalies)
2018 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #53 by TSN/McKenzie

It's all over the map. Even if you go with the most favorable rating for any of these guys, I still think Lindbom was a round or two too high. Although, this does show certain outlets are higher on goalies than most, like TSN/Mac.

EDIT: All the rankings info pulled from their Eliteprospects.com pages.

Their goalies Rankings are all over the map just like ours are as well. It's so difficult to really predict how goalies will turn out these days, especially at 18 years old.

The way the first several goalies went:

Ran. 39. Lindbom
Edm 62. Rodrigue
Colo. 64. Annunen
Isl . 72. Skarek (and they've already signed him--that might be because their goalie situation has been a nightmare)
Det. 84. Eliasson
Ariz. 85. Dostal

Not a fantastic year for goalies particularly North American ones. Rodrigue's the only one in the first three rounds. One question I have and there's really no way of answering it is would Lindbom still been on board at 70. or 88. ? when the Rangers picked Ragnarsson and Keane. Probably not 88. I'm not a big fan of the Hockey News by the way. The reason I get their draft issue is it's the most accessible at least in terms of having a hard copy (this is what happens when you're older--you still find yourself looking for solutions outside the technological realm) and it doesn't cost as much as most of the others.

The Rangers obviously have high hopes for Lindbom. It's too early to know if it was sound choice or an unfounded one. Time will tell. Just think that when you can pick up an undrafted guy like Georgiev what are we using 2nd round picks on goalies for?
