Not to be a debbie downer but what is our record in series when up 3-1? I know it's the worst in Sports history, and I know it's below .500, but what dear God is it?

...so I can remember what we're up against.

I will also say, I'll take a 3-1 series lead every...single...time.
History is meaningless. Different group with a different mentality and different leadership.

Pee-air is trying to pump up the Rangers' tires and is predicting/lobbying for a long series.

Reminiscing about the good old days.

Q: Can coming back from being down 3-1 last year be a help now?

A: Absolutely, it helps. When I was coaching in Pittsburgh in 1991, we were down 2-0 to Boston in Eastern Conference Finals and we found a way to win. The next year we were down 3-1 to the Capitals and that Boston series was our reference point. You take a lot out of those situations, and I am sure those Rangers players appreciate what has to be done.

The absolute irony of it all.

Q: Would you say the Blackhawks have established themselves as the Stanley Cup favorites?

A: I stand between the benches, so I don’t think playing favorites is a good idea. But I will say that Chicago is playing at a level right now they have not played at all year in terms of consistency and everybody firing on all cylinders.

It's 6-4 so not below .500 but not that far from it.

2011 v NYR, won in 5
2010 v MTL, lost in 7
1998 v BUF, won in 6
1998 v OTT, won in 5
1998 v BOS, won in 6
1995 v PIT, lost in 7
1994 v PIT, won in 6
1992 v PIT, lost in 7
1990 v NYR, won in 5
1987 v NYI, lost in 7

They've never had it go seven and won. They have seasonally alternated losses and wins as the situation has occurred. Half of their 3-1 series wins came in the 1998 run.

Yes. Repeat those results plz.

It's the 2-0 series lead in a best of seven that's often been blown. They're just 2-4 in those.

The Caps are literally one game from the Stanley Cup finals IMO. Tampa, while very good, is still a year away I think. If the Caps blow this 3-1 series lead it will be the most devastating to date.

They've never had it go seven and won. They have seasonally alternated losses and wins as the situation has occurred. Half of their 3-1 series wins came in the 1998 run.

And if it were coin tosses, you'd have a 1 in 8 chance of winning three in a row, which leaves a 7 in 8 chance of not winning three in a row.

Except usually the team up 3-1 is the overall better team, at least at the moment when you're getting ready to start game 5, so really being up 3-1 should as a general matter give you an even better than 7 in 8 chance. But probably only a pretty small incremental increase. I'd settle for 7 out of 8.

So, I guess since the Caps have lost four times after being up 3-1, and since we should have (at least) seven wins for every one of those losses, then we need to get that 6-4 up to at least 28-4, so we need to try to go 22-0 over the next 22 times we're up 3-1 to really erase the pain.

The Rangers are their greatest challenge remaining. They match
up fairly well with everyone else.

I'm trying really hard to expect the worst...

I think the strategy tommorow should be determined by the first period. If the Rangers come out blazing and put up multiple goals, time to pull Holtby before the second, and save our energy for Game 6.

that may be the most ridiculous thing I've ever read on these boards.

sycamore's just getting excited is all. And fearing what we all expect, which is the Rangers to start out blazing, y'know, since they're facing elimination at home.

I'm excited as hell. Still trying my best to not think beyond the next one game.

At this point, anything is possible.
Worst case scenario (we **** up with yet another 2nd round exit) to best scenario (we win the Cup).

I never thought I'd say this just a year after Oates was fired, but we are finally Cup contenders.
I've never felt that good being a Caps fan.

We need to finish them off tomorrow, otherwise they could take us to game 7 easily. The time is now, we will see if this team has any killer instinct. They did it against the Isles in game 7, they must do it tomorrow.

I would love for them to win tomorrow but it is pretty damn hard to win 3 games in a row in the playoffs Especially when the games have been this close. Not optimistic but would love to be wrong.

It'd take magic for the Caps to win tommorow.

They are lucky to be up 3-1.
