Once again I long after the lost internet meme picture of success and failure juxtaposing some Amazonas hunters carrying an anaconda back to the village and the Ferrari pit crew carrying the loose fuel hose that was dragged to the pit lane exit on Felipe Massa's car...

I saw "Felipe Massa" and immediately thought you were going to mention the bouncing spring that nearly killed him. Had forgotten about the fuel hose madness.

I missed 3rd period & OT during this game and just watched the replay of the goal until this morning where I sat down to watch the full highlight video.

Kochetkov definitely played the puck outside the trapezoid about 20 seconds before our goal, followup to the 2nd Toffoli chance.

This play shows why many might view Necas as a "turnover" machine. He can make plays at speed so he often attempts them. Look at that move he made at about the 4-5 second mark to get by the defender and get into a prime shooting spot. That move was crucial for this play and Aho's goal to be successful. Because it was successful, we don't think anything of it.

If that Devil's player had gotten his stick on the puck with Aho and Slavin both heading toward the net, it could have easily been a 2-0 in the opposite direction for NJ and people would be calling for his head.

He's a skilled guy that can make plays at speed and when he's confident, he tries to make those plays. Really only he and Aho have that speed and ability. TT slows the game down. Svech uses his power. Jarvis shields the puck from defenders. etc..

If we don't have Necas on this team, I think we'd miss this element of his game a lot, even with the warts.
When he's on his game he's a dynamic player who gives us an offensive edge we desperately need. When he's off his game, you can make the argument he's the worst player on the ice.

That's what is frustrating about him. That lack of consistency really makes it so you really don't know what to expect of the guy in any given night. He could be the reason you win just as easily as he can be the reason you lose.

Against Vancouver last week he was probably the only guy on the ice who was trying anything offensively. Rest of the team was in a shell and he's out there trying to spin move 2 or 3 guys in a row to get the puck in the zone and it was kind of working. Just wish we had anyone else on the ice out there with him who could keep up.

I know a lot of folks on both ends don’t like the idea of Whalers night, and that’s fine. I just got sort of re-create a moment in time with my kids that I had with my parents and when my wife took the exhausted young ones back to the hotel and let me stay with my oldest it felt like so many Whalers games I went to with my dad. Seeing my son’s face and hearing him screaming “My favorite player scored in overtime for the Whalers!” Is something I’m not going to forget anytime soon.

pretty sure I saw a clear replay that he didn't touch the puck, he tried to but missed and Hughes was the one to touch it not Koochie.

So inspite of the tepid play you get a memory to last a lifetime

If you like spending extra for man sweat and a signature, there are some comparably decent priced options still available

The prices are much, much lower than in years past. I wonder if we’re hitting the point where anyone who wants one of these at a $1K+ price point already has one. Or if people just don’t have the money after getting squeezed in all the other ways.

Doing something dumb with it? yes, if it results in an unforced error turning the puck over. Being stripped? No. That will be a takeaway from the other team, but not a giveaway.

A giveaway is generally when a player makes an unforced error that gives the puck up to the other team.

NJ had 10 takeaways last night (Jack Hughes had 4 of them). Necas had very little TOI against Jack Hughes last night.

His most common opponents:
he had 9:25 against Meier (who had 1 takeaway)
9:19 against Lazar (who had 0 takeaways)
7:49 against Mercer (who had 0 takeaways)
6:01 against Marino (who had 0 takeaways)
5:48 against Luke Hughes (who had 2 takeaways)
5:01 against Nemec (0 takeaways)
5:12 against Hatakka (0 takeaways)

Carolina had 12 takeaways lat night. Here's the take-aways:

TT: 3
Orlov: 2
Jarvis, Aho, Drury, Bunting, Slavin, Martinook, and Burns each with 1

Listening to Rod's interview and a few players interviews, sounds like the ice was shit last night. I guess the 74 degree day was the cause?
didn't even need to hear their interview to know the ice was shit on Saturday. Just watching some of the strange-ass bounces had me convinced of that less than 5 minutes into the game.

I think a bit of both really. I really considered bidding on the Freddy jersey as that's REALLY a good price for one of these, but at the same time general inflation these past few years and the inflation of cost of attending a game has really turbo f***ed any interest I have in bidding. Not just tickets (which have probably been the least inflated item if you can believe it), but price of food, parking, etc. Just all adds up. 3 years ago I would have been all over bidding on that.

It’s the bolded that I think is starting to have a real impact. If they’re gonna ask for another $20 a night for parking over what they were doing just a couple of years ago, that’s hundreds of dollars for their regular customers. Cranking up the cost of simple stuff like beer and tshirts, let along big ticket items, it has an impact. Rolling out new “must have” jerseys every other year has an impact.

I know the corporate attitude is that there’s always more money for people to pull from, but that attitude has an upper limit. At some point you reach a day where someone who really would have spent $1000 on a jersey won’t do it because they’re tapped out on Canes related spending.

That doesn’t even get into general inflation, which is a whole other factor.

I watched the Devils feed and for half the game they would occasionally refer to the team as “Hartford”.

“Hartford breaks the puck out of the zone”.

I thought they were just having fun with it which I appreciated but then they laughed and apologized to the audience. They were both doing it accidentally. Watching the team play in the jerseys they just adapted and went into an old habit. Some one behind the scenes presumably clued them in.

Made a little warm spot in my cold heart. I don’t like the neck of the jerseys up close but they looked great on tv.

If they bring back the Hornets colored Hurricanes jerseys back, I would easily break the bank for one of them. It’s my white whale of jerseys.

I think that’s what makes these nights so great. Yeah, at first, I was thinking the same as everyone else. ”These Whaler Nights are simply cash grab done because Dundon recognizes he’s got a valuable asset that’s been underutilized.” And I think the first few Whaler Nights definitely had that feel behind it.

But lately, and this last one especially, the organization has gone all-in on treating it more like an “honoring the history” kind of thing. The broadcast changed all the logos and colors to Whaler colors, Tripp tried to consistently refer to them as the Whalers, the officiating crew referred to them as the Hartford, etc. The social media leading up to the game was amazing, all the retro magazine covers and “sitcom-y” opening for the players. Definitely the best one thus far, IMO.
