Worked there in high school in the 60s when it was the Colony - a couple years after this photo (my sister was 5 and remembers going to see it). Owners were friends. Many memories. Everything from usher to changing the marquee to runnung the projector eventually. Big deal when protesters came for Guess Who's Coming to Dinner...

Wow..that's a fantastic photo. I didn't know that it was first called the Colony. It's been a bummer seeing the Colony sitting vacant for years now as well. So prefer this experience over the big box theatres even with all of the amenities.

And, some of the films I have seen there over the years! At times there have been some real head scratcher doozies but so provocative at the same time. Sounds like the new owners are going to mix it up a bit.

Lots of classics w reserved seating. Camelot, Oliver, etc.

And the stories I could tell. It was the late 60s...

Any suggestions for a good place to watch the game on Saturday night? North Raleigh preferred. Hoping to find a spot that isn't standing room only.

I've never been but I was in town before the playoffs and drove by The Pipers Tavern on Falls of Neuse. Saw a couple wearing Canes jerseys walk in. Might be a consideration

It's far from North Raleigh, but the new Sports & Social in Cary is a pretty awesome place to see a game.

The area surrounding it is also pretty cool, and worth the drive to Cary if that's an option.

The biggest downside that it can get VERY loud when crowded.

Naturally your ability to get a seat will depend on when you get there. It's not normally as crowded as the pic above, which looks like it was during some sort of event.

Hey Caniacs, looking for some information on Rocky Mount / Wilson area.

I'll make this short and sweet. Rocky Mount is not a nice place. It's probably our states version of Gary Indiana or East St Louis but no major city next door, or at least it was. I know there was some effort to re-invent the city but you can only do so much.

Wilson is, okay I guess? Been there once, seemed more lively than Rocky Mount.

Oiy. Got ya. Thank you.

I interviewed with my job to open up a new market in North Carolina, and I was selected for Wilson and my girlfriend was selected for Rocky Mount.

thankfully Rocky Mount is fairly close to Wilson so living in Wilson and her commuting to Rocky Mount is a realistic possibility. Closer to the two relative to Raleigh as well.

Yeah, when we interviewed, we made sure to tell the AM interviewing us that we would need to be in two close locations, within travel reason. Or we could live somewhere between both. We’ve been looking on and off to see if we see anything that might work. We need to figure out where our locations will be though, I’m sure Wilson & Rocky mount aren’t like small circle areas, lol.

The research is starting, so I figured I’d pop here and see if anyone here could enlighten me about it.

If you both are feeling adventurous you could try Eastern Wake County (same County as Raleigh).

I don't think there's much between Rocky Mount and Wilson but YMMV.

My sister lived in Zebulon and worked for the Pfizer location in Rocky Mount (the one that got tornado'd) for several years. Her commute was only about 35 minutes, depending on traffic, obviously. According to google, Wilson is only about a 25-30 minute drive.

Going to my first Canes game on November 24 Vs Tampa.

Some questions for everyone:
1. Practice - It’s an 8pm game - when would practice usually start? And are fans allowed to watch practice?

2. Parking - what does everyone usually do for parking? Is there any free parking around? If not where can I find some affordable parking for 1 car (sedan)?

3. Traffic - how bad is traffic for game nights? I’m coming from north…likely taking capital Boulevard.

Thanks!

#1 is a good question, not sure on that one. Honestly it might depend on if they're doing the practice at PNC (in which case most likely closed) or at the new practice facility.

#2 in the past there's been free parking across Edwards Mill at the business park off Wade Park Blvd, and I've seen people park at Cardinal Gibbons HS and go across to get to games. There's an underpass at the Wade Park side that's probably the easier of the two options to get across. I think there's free parking usually out at the Fairgrounds as well but I never park out that way and there was speculation that they were going to crack down on that anyway. Backyard Bistro, the sportsbar across from the stadium, also generally has cheaper parking if you do dinner there before the game, but the place fills up early.

#3 Depends on where you park. The Edwards Mill side tends to have the better traffic flow in my experience so I try to park to be able to exit that way whenever possible. There's been times when I park on the Blue Ridge side of things when I'm late getting to the game and I'm up near the NCSU practice field that it's taken a LONG time to get out.

Some questions for everyone:

They take the ice for warmups about 30 minutes before game time. If you’re in the arena at 7:30 you’ll catch the whole thing.

Yes you are allowed to watch warmups — you’re even allowed to go right down to the glass and pick a spot to watch from. For a first-game experience this is highly recommended and 100% worth getting there early for. If you want to be right on the actual glass with nobody in front of you, cut it a little earlier to be safe. Trust me, it’s a magical experience the first time you do it. Once they blow the horn to end warmups, you need to get out of that area so folks can get to their seats.

2. Parking - what does everyone usually do for parking? Is there any free parking around? If not where can I find some affordable parking for 1 car (sedan)?

The vast vast majority of cars park in the arena lots for $25. I would advise not paying for premium parking unless you plan to tailgate early and leave very late. Yes the walk to the door is a little shorter, but the traffic is horrific when you’re at the very back of the line while trying to leave.

If you want to cut the price back to more like $10-$20 you may be able to find parking at a nearby business (try Backyard Bistro) but be advised that it’s a long walk considering you’re still paying money for the privilege. The weather should be crisp and dry in November, but in the event of poor weather it can be a miserable walk with moving cars all around.

Free parking is available at the deck at Wade Park. It’s slightly under a mile walk to the arena from there, and not unpleasant, but be advised that it involves a brief but rather dark passage through a greenway area. It’s absolutely safe and I’ve never heard of any issues there, but it’s dark enough to require phone flashlights and some people just don’t like the creepy factor. Otherwise it’s fine. If you decide to go that route, just route yourself to Wade Park Cafe. Park in the nearby deck (you can’t miss it) and follow anyone in a Canes jersey as they will be headed toward the arena. People are very nice about giving directions if you need them.

3. Traffic - how bad is traffic for game nights? I’m coming from north…likely taking capital Boulevard.

“Bad traffic” is a relative thing, depending on what you’re used to. Is it Los Angeles bad, no. But there are jams around the arena which start building up about 30-45 minutes before game time, so getting there early will make for a much less stressful experience than pushing it till the last minute. Assuming full physical mobility and a willingness to speed-walk, I’d say the drop-dead cutoff for making puck drop is to get into the area around 20 minutes before the hour. Assuming no shenanigans, that should give you time to fight traffic, park, walk, get through security, and find your seat just as the anthem is wrapping up. But for your first game, I’d give it a little more time so you can catch the pregame hype intro which is worth seeing.

Overall, as long as you’re cool with paying the $25, I would strongly recommend:

- Arrive at the arena at 6:45pm. Park about halfway back in the parking lot if possible. Take some time to enjoy the pregame atmosphere outside the arena.

- Try to get in the security line by around 7:00pm. Remember to check the arena bag policy, especially if there are any purses involved.

- Circle the arena to the north end, in the range of sections 110-113. Enjoy the walk but don’t linger too long. Just make a mental note of things to come back to later. Once you’re at the north end, go into the lower bowl. If an usher asks for a ticket, just say you’re there to watch warmups and they’ll wave you through. If you get there quickly, you might still be early enough to post up on the glass. Worst case, you’ll be very close. It will be worth the wait once the players come out.

- After warmups, go back and check out some of the things you didn’t have time to see on the walk in.

- Be in your seat by 8:00pm sharp. Catch the whole pregame show, it’s worth it and you’ll be pumped by the time the anthem ends. From there, enjoy the game and explore the arena.

- After the game, don’t rush to leave. The parking lot’s a mess regardless, so **** it. Watch the 3 stars, catch the postgame interview. Take your leisurely time leaving the building. Once outside, go back to the north end. You’ll see the loading dock at the back of the building, which is also the players’ entrance. There will be a crowd lined up along the street. Find a good front row spot and hang out for a bit. The people there are all diehard fans and will openly welcome Canes chat from strangers. Tell them it’s your first game, you never know what might happen. Give it about another 15 minutes and the players will start driving out one at a time. Most will just wave and drive by, but at least half a dozen will pull up and roll their windows down to sign autographs and take selfies. You can count on Slavin, and it’s a really safe bet you also get to meet Staal and Burns among others. This is your chance, ask them anything. Get your face autographed. The ones who like to stop are good guys and great with the fans.

- If you parked in the lot, there will be literally zero traffic so you can just get back to your car and drive out with zero stress. If you decided to save the money and park at Wade Park: when you get to the greenway, you will 100% have that moment of reconsidering why you trusted a stranger on the internet. It’s viscerally weird to walk that path in the dark. I promise, it’s dark but not dangerous. Again, there will be no more traffic jam in that deck area by the time you get there.

Yes you’ll finally get home 6+ hours after you left, but that’s the most bang you can get for your buck at PNC.

You mean downtown Raleigh?

Edit: I guess I’m not following. As far as I’ve seen, downtown is as clean and quiet as ever. The lower end of Glenwood is a bit of a zoo, but it’s been that way for a while now, and I’m not sure whether that’s really considered downtown as it’s kind of its own district.

Yeah, not just the lower part of Glenwood but down by Moore Square is really a shitshow now (not that's its ever been great- I once got hassled there while on a military exercise dressed in a suit and wearing an earpiece receiver FFS).

Have a buddy on the force- the number of cops available to cover this city on any given night is shocking. And I was like "yet you can cut loose a bunch to work every Canes game??". Instead of hiring private security to cover downtown the mayor needs to hire them for PNC and let the cops do cop stuff.

It is certainly quieter in terms of volume of people though.

Ah I see, that makes sense. Moore Square is in a tough spot with the rescue mission on one side, a bunch of trendy restaurants/nightlife on two sides, and Marbles of all things on the fourth side. It’s the natural place for the homeless to congregate, but also the natural place for families during the day and drinkers at night. I’ve always felt like it was the most uncomfortable block in downtown for that reason.

Not sure what can be done about it other than police presence. My guess is they’ll eventually push the rescue mission into the hood somewhere in order to clear the park of that crowd, which is ****ed up but inevitable.

I was in DTR on Saturday last week (while tropical storm Opheliea was making it rain) and honestly even at 11am on a rainy day it seemed lively-ish. First time I'd been since, 2016 maybe?

We took my nephew to the museums if you wanted to know, they were hopping.
