With that beautiful assist last night, Gudas hit the 20 point mark in 59 games. He sits 17th in 5v5 P/60 for defensemen (min. 1,000 minutes). In good company. Posting strong possession numbers again this year. Top 20 league wide in relative CF% for D. Leads Flyers D in both categories. He's a shot monster. 3rd in the league in shots attempted per 60 behind Brent Burns (who's not human) and Dougie Hamilton. Is this guy still underrated? The numbers suggest he's a top pair D at even strength.

I've been trying to argue that he is a top pair level player since early in his time here while others were saying he's 3rd pairing guy at best. I was going by eye test but the numbers seem to verify that

Best part is, he still doesn't get PP2 time on the right side.

Hak would rather use a lefty there that has to pull the puck off the wall on his backhand and have a PKer on top of him by the time he lines up a shot.

I have zero issue with him not playing on the PP tbh. It's not his skill-set and requires more patience. And there won't be room as soon as next year.

What pisses me off is not using him in OT. Ever. He's a good skater, he's aggressive, he has underrated puck skills, he's our best d man along with Provorov. But Hakstol will play everyone but Gudas. He just really loves to pigeonhole and stereotype players.

Hes been really good and is signed to a good contract. Really glad he's locked up for his prime. He'll be the only competent vet we'll have as the young guys come up through the ranks.

Used some of these numbers on a fan page and got told "Considering Gudas a top 2 D-man is a joke"

It's hard for people to separate 5v5 play from overall performance. Gudas doesn't get the PP time to accumulate the raw numbers needed to be in the conversation of top defensemen in the league. And he's on the 2nd PK so he doesn't even really pad his time on ice stats either (even though his PK numbers are pretty good too).

Just realized I made this thread when he had 1 point last year.

Hakstol's latest alleged crime is playing a lefty on the right side of a PP unit.

Yep, and i wouldn't argue he's an elite #1 guy by any stretch - but he's a lot better "offensively" than people seem to notice. He's a player that makes a difference in terms of driving the play in a positive direction consistently.

I see Gudas as a solid 2nd pair guy, though if you keep Morin and Sanheim together next year, I can see him with Provorov.
Once Myers joins the team, they might pair Gudas with Ghost (moving him back to LHD), to provide "protection."

Gudas doesn't skate that well, he's much better than L Schenn or Grossman or ancient Streit, a little faster than Manning, but not as fast as MacDonald and well below Provorov and Ghost. He's "fast enough," knows his limitations, and intimidates most forwards trying to enter the O-zone because they know if they have the puck, they have a bullseye on their uniform.

I'm definitely guilty of that with Hakstol sometimes.

Depends on who the lefty is though. Ghost can handle it. Others cant.

Gudas since joining Flyers (rank amongst Dmen with 1000+ mins):

5v5 G/60: 0.24 (37/189
5v5 P/60: 0.83 (54/189)
5v5 Sh/60: 6.03 (15/189)
5v5 iCorsi/60: 15.12 (2/189)

GF rel: +4.4 (36/189)

CF%: 54% (11/189)
CF/60: 62.75 (6/189)
CA/60: 53.39 (70/189)
CF rel: +4.6 (7/189)
CF/60 rel: +7.03 (6/189)
CA/60 rel: -3.58 (29/189)

And he has done that facing ~2nd line competition with more DZS than OZS.
