Yes, for a 26 year old top 4 dman like Gudas the cap hit will go up if you want more years.

It's the older guys, and more marginal players where you can lower the cap hit by giving them more security.

Funnily enough Leo Gudas and Jagr played together for Czechoslovakia a few times...

World Championships 1990.
Canada Cup 1991.

Plus a few other random international games from 1990-93.

He already has 13 points in 39 games, compared to 14 in 76 last season.

But he's already missed five games thru injury, so hopefully the two recent breaks have helped him get closer to 100%.

With that beautiful assist last night, Gudas hit the 20 point mark in 59 games. He sits 17th in 5v5 P/60 for defensemen (min. 1,000 minutes). In good company. Posting strong possession numbers again this year. Top 20 league wide in relative CF% for D. Leads Flyers D in both categories. He's a shot monster. 3rd in the league in shots attempted per 60 behind Brent Burns (who's not human) and Dougie Hamilton. Is this guy still underrated? The numbers suggest he's a top pair D at even strength.

And so does the eye test. What an awesome trade.

Now who was it giving people a hard time saying the return wasn't that great? I'm sure someone remembers.

Not sure if this is a valid concern, but is there a way to determine the quality of SA? It seems like Gudas doesn't find openings too much from the point. Sometimes he surprises D and goalies with his shot

He's 11th in unblocked shot attempts and 20th in shots on goal rate. The guys in front of him are the guys you would expect- the "offensive" defensemen. Although Deryk Engelland is in the picture.

He does?

I laugh when he doesn't take a shot. I have to imagine other teams know he just shoots everything too. He's just got a super quick release on his snap shot from up there that generates crazy power, and he is good at finding the shooting lane. He's not Brent Burns of course in talent, but that's akin to what he does nonstop too.

I also imagine his shot quality isn't terribly high given the distance at which he tends to shoot, but he's not a skilled player with the ability to make moves at the blue line (though he'll surprise now and again). His success is in pure volume. He shoots everything, but just as importantly, his ability to keep cycles alive just leads to more volume. That's his real calling card and important in why his possession stats are great. At the same time, a lot of his shots go through a lot of bodies to create havoc. Someone like Manning also shoots the puck every time he touches it, but it rarely feels dangerous. Often long wind up slappers, goalie has eyes on it.

Gudas is also smart enough to use his wrist shot to get the puck on goal instead of winding up, he'll snap it off, sacrificing velocity for a quick release that makes it hard to block. I wish the other defensemen would learn from that, a soft unexpected shot that makes it through bodies to the goalie is more valuable than a wild slap shot that a goalie can time.

The key for defensemen shooting from the point isn't to beat the goalie, it's to surprise the goalie and get rebounds in front of the net.

If I had a dollar for every time Manning took a slapper immediately after getting the puck despite there being literally zero traffic in front.

I wonder what happens more a game: Manning takes a zero traffic slapper immediately upon touching the puck that leads to an easy save......or MacDonald taking a slow wind up slap shot or one timer through loads of traffic that gets blocked 15 feet from the net.

Best part is, he still doesn't get PP2 time on the right side.

Hak would rather use a lefty there that has to pull the puck off the wall on his backhand and have a PKer on top of him by the time he lines up a shot.
