I am concerned about his defensive game and I am concerned about his size. Watching Dustin Brown blow past him like he wasn't there and watching him shy away from contact at points last night was concerning. I envision him getting lit up multiple times and getting eaten up by elite teams for his first full year or two. But I don't think there's any reason he can't be as good as Stecher on defense which I mean as a compliment. Overall, it's very exciting to have this talent on the blueline.

I literally have a cognitive dissonance from nearly two decades as a Canucks fan where it's very hard for my brain to process prospects working out. Watching Boeser, Petterson and Hughes just pushes my brain into a new paradigm. I don't know if zoomers can appreciate this but after two decades of the Nathan Smith's, Patrick White's, Taylor Ellington's, Nicklas Jensen's, Jake Virtanen's my old boomer brain hurts processing this.

Praise Judd Bracket.

Im settled down. Those are his attributes.

Where do you rank his skating?

His biggest strenght is how he gets the puck out of the zone. He has done it all his career and you could see him against the Kings. You disagree?

Not expecting anything interesting as an answer, but decided to try anyways.

He's a really good skater but 1 game in the NHL is too soon to say that's he's the best skating defencemen

Still concerned about his size and injury risk but his skating was unbelievably good and passes looked bang on accurate.
Really good for 1st ever game.

Well, Hughes is a hell of D prospect, and I'm very happy for you, Nucks fans, but his 'career', like you said, has begun yesterday.

No. He existed before he entered the NHL. I was very sceptical he could gey away with his jr playstyle in the NHL and he proved me wrong. Obviously the Kings are just about as easy a test as he could have at this level. We will see.

I agree his skating and footwork is phenomenal. All I said was it's way too soon to say that he's the best skating defencemen in the league and I still stand by that.

There are some fabulous skaters in the league. I think the teams are realizing the smaller more skilled D men drive possession better than those larger poorer skaters. Quinn’s possession last night was 70 % shots for to 30% against while he was on the ice. I hope we can get his brother in this draft. If not him then get Byram. We need elite skating and skilled guys who drive play. Quinn clearly does that extremely well.

Watched some highlights today as was working last night and damn. Canucks have some razzle dazzle moving forward. Pettersson, Boeser, Hughes looked down right amazing with the puck. Add Horvat and this years 1st plus a a couple Dman with Demko and man oh man I see the light finally !!

still laughing at his critics on here who said he will trouble generating offence because of his WJC performance and that he is likely top out as a 5th defenceman PP specialist.

Can you name 5 better skating NHL D men?

If you take into consideration acceleration AND top speed AND edgework/balance, i'd say the following 5 guys are better overall skaters:
Karlsson, Doughty, Ellis, Seth Jones, Letang, Burns.

Hughes is small so he looks faster than bigger guys. However Letang/Doughty/Karlsson would all beat Hughes in a race from the goal line to the opposing blueline

I missed the game last night because of work but watching the highlights this morning he looked about impressive as a defenseman playing his 1st NHL game can look.

Being a Canucks' fan since '94 it almost seems surreal to be treated to these exciting prospects making the NHL and having immediate success. This doesn't seem right.

This is horseshit.

Even his strongest critics, who are few and far between, said that his FLOOR is as a #5 PP specialist.

Literally no one I've seen has said that his CEILING is what you've stated.

Nope, you can dig it for yourself but there have been comparisons made of him being a small PP specialist defenceman because he is too small to be top 4. I also remember arguing with [MOD] here saying he will have a hard time producing offence at the NHL level based on his WJC performance.

Very impressive debut. It will be fun to watch him after he's had a full training camp with the team. Watching him and EP in OT was quite a treat.
