Maybe I am getting different angles..I went back and watched it. The studs on the lead leg definitely went across the shin just before the trailing leg hit him. You can see his right leg react to the impact a bit.
That's the hockey philosophy you describe, you can keep it.Straight red cards really should be absolutely last resort and for very obscene and obvious fouls...intent to injure or denial of goal scoring opportunity. Should always start with yellow, and two yellow = red is the right way to control the game.
Cheap red cards totally ruin the sport, an entire game can be thrown out because of it.
