I can see why Hextall brought Emery back, it's not exactly a year where we're going all or nothing, whatever happens, happens. Might as well keep mase happy as possible with a friend backing him up. Next year they can find someone else

I'm sure you'll feel the same way if the Flyers miss the playoffs by a handful of points because their backup is sub-NHL quality. There are better goalies that are about to be put on waivers, yet here we are with Emery only a potential play away from being our starter.

Although Emery hasnt had the opportunity to play this preseason, what he showed in that first game wasnt great. In the Playoffs and towards the end of last season his game just looked awful and it seems as if he was right back in the same form.

Hopefully he gets healthier and can show that he can still make saves.

Although on the other hand, I really do like what I have seen from Zepp and judging off the beat writers and comments from others it seems that he has been playing great.

I would really like to see more of him.

I will. This isn't our year, might as well get a good pick in a deep draft and come back strong next year. We aren't ready to contend so there's not much point to go out and spend on a backup. And I still think we make the playoffs, I just don't see it as a must.

Looks like we're running with McIlrath, according to Cerny at Blueshirtsunited.

Is Simmonds playing? :)

Also, Duclair-Mueller-Haggerty will be the third, with Glass-Hayes-Fast being 4th. Not that it matters much, just saying.

I would have gone after Greiss. Montoya I think was destined for Florida, but maybe Greiss could have been swayed by some extra cash.

Eh, if the Flyers miss the playoffs by a handful of points, I don't think the blame will be pointed at Emery (well, it probably will but shouldn't be). Obviously, having a better backup would presumably get this team more points, but the same could be said about any number of positions over an 82 game season. If the cutoff is 96 points and they get 92, you could probably point 100 different things that could have changed the outcome of two games besides Emery (bad calls, missteps by Mason, missteps by the Defense, poor offensive performances in some games, etc). Not to mention that while I'm sure Emery will have his bad games, he'll also have good games where maybe the team wouldn't have won if there was another goalie in net. I know people like to think that if there is a better goalie in net he would get every save that the lesser goalie would have (and more), but it doesn't really work that way. Again, that doesn't mean that having a better backup wouldn't necessarily get us more points, but in the 82 games season, if we miss the playoffs by a handful of points (or a ton of points), there will be more than just Ray Emery at fault. He'll get some of the blame for sure, and from the folks around here he will probably be the #1 reason, but there are close games throughout the course of the season that can go a number of different ways for a number of different reasons. As I have discussed ad nauseum on here, one player can rarely make the difference in a hockey game, playoff series, and certainly season.

Eh, if the Flyers miss the playoffs by a handful of points, I don't think the blame will be pointed at Emery (well, it probably will but shouldn't be). A better backup leads to more wins, full stop. You can justify it in your mind until you're blue in the face, but it doesn't make it true. If there's one spot on the ice that can absolutely win or lose a game for a team, it's the goaltender.

Goaltending is the variable with the most direct impact on a hockey game. Yeah, there are countless other reasons for missing the playoffs, but if my goal is to maximize the amount of points by the end of the season, improving the goaltending variable is the single best way to ensure this.

I could change other variables, but the change in performance is MUCH less well-defined than changing the goaltending variable.

Signing a better backup was perhaps the single simplest way to pick up a couple extra points in the standings. I know you get your jollies from disagreeing with the consensus, but there isn't anything to argue about here.

This is one of the most bizarre explanations I've read on here.

Having better players doesn't give you a better chance at making the playoffs? I mean wtf, step back and think about what you are saying for a second.

Absolutely, but so does better defense, offense, power play, penalty kill, etc. Over the course of an 82 game season, there is absolutely no way you can point to one thing and say THIS is why we didn't make the playoffs. Yes, a better backup likely leads to more wins. No argument there. But so does a better defense, no? So too does a better anything else.

Goaltending is the variable with the most direct impact on a hockey game. Yeah, there are countless other reasons for missing the playoffs, but if my goal is to maximize the amount of points by the end of the season, improving the goaltending variable is the single best way to ensure this.

But we know there are flaws in the defense too, don't we? If MDZ or Grossmann or Schenn or whomever sucks as everyone on here says that they do, why wouldn't replacing one of them get us an additional two points or four points? What about replacing Rinaldo...everyone is so convinced that he is such a big detriment to this team, why wouldn't replacing him be just as big (if not bigger) than Ray Emery being in net losing 2-3 games that another goalie would not have lost?

This is one of the most bizarre explanations I've read on here.

Having Ray Emery in net means the Flyers will only win one game this season. I mean wtf, step back and think about what you are saying for a second...

It helps if you read the post and not just see a somewhat defense of a goalie and immediately assume I am saying something crazy. Two direct quotes from my post...

1. "Obviously, having a better backup would presumably get this team more points..."

2. "Again, that doesn't mean that having a better backup wouldn't necessarily get us more points..."

The end of those quotes say, quite clearly, that are other reasons over the course of an 82 game season that can be pointed to as a reason for not making the playoffs. I am not in any way saying having a better backup wouldn't help or would somehow be a bad thing, all I'm saying is that if this team misses the playoffs by a handful of points, I don't think Ray Emery should get all the blame. Absolutely he gets some of it. No question. But there are countless reasons that factor in. Everyone on this board is obsessed with having a 100% clear-cut reason for everything. It has to be player X, coach Y, or GM Z's fault. Every loss is because defenseman X missed a play, or goalie Y should have made a save. It doesn't work that way. This is an 82 game season. If they miss the playoffs by 2 points or 20 points, there is more than one person to blame. Yes, you put a different goalie in there it gives the team a better shot. But the same thing happens if you improve the defense, the offense, the power play, your luck, whatever else.

But whatever, I guess saying that there are multiple factors, including backup goalie, that would be to blame means the same thing as saying having better players doesn't improve our chances.
