This roster has Booth as an ordinary buyout. I am guessing Tanev goes to arbitration? I like Fistric as a free agent signing.

I avoided players the Canucks are apparently letting go, so no Lapierre or Roy. I also think the top lines are inverted but that will evolve organically.

^ So we spend a bunch of money on buying out Booth and in the process become a worse team with no fourth line to speak of and two rookies who may or may not even be capable of playing 4th line minutes up on the 3rd? With another guy who hasn't showed he can consistently produce playing on our first line? Wow, that's bleak... and the absence of Schroeder is very odd if you have Gaunce there.

I don't oppose the idea of playing Kassian with the Sedins necessarily, if he can show he can stick there. I don't mind Hansen on the 2nd line. But that roster, dare I say, might be a borderline playoff team.

It's gonna go like this;

Sedin (6.1) - Sedin (6.1) - Burrows (4.5)
Booth (4.2) - Kesler (5.0) - Kassian (0.87)
Higgins (2.5) - Schroeder (?) - Hansen (1.35)
Weise (?) - ____________ - ____________
*Sestito (0.75)

Hamhuis (4.5) - Bieksa (4.6)
Edler (5.0) - Tanev (?)
Garrison (4.6) - Corrado (0.6)
*________

Luongo (5.333)
Lack (0.75)

Total: $56,753,000

Let's say Gillis wants to keep it $1M under the cap for callups and/or potential deadline deal, therefore, we have $6.547M to re-sign Tanev, Schroeder, Weise and to sign two 4th forwards and 1 depth defencemen.

Keys for this team to have success;
-Booth MUST stay healthy
-Kassian must turn potential into reality
-Ditto for Schroeder
-Two key 4th line forwards to improve the bottom 9 preferably with size, grit and what Tortorella likes to say "Bite" and "Stiffness"
-Luongo has a great year

With Tortorella, Sullivan, and Gulutzan on board I can see us have a very successful regular season and perhaps a 2nd round appearance or max WCF appearance.

Booth-Kesler-Jensen/Burrows
Higgins-Schroeder-Hansen
Kassian-Richardson-Weise
Sestito

Hamhuis-Bieksa

Pretty solid lineup if you ask me, I suspect Jensen is ready to contribute also. I am thinking he will suprise a lot of people.

Jensen is nowhere ready to assume top 6 NHL minutes, i don't believe. I doubt if he's ready for regular NHL minutes at this time.

I'll think the top 6 will look like this with our current players:

Sedin-Sedin-Burrows
Booth-Kesler-Hansen

Hansen and Kassian could be interchangeable as well, but I think JT will like the defensive play and the speed on Hansen on the 2nd, allowing Kes and Booth to be the go to offensive guys.

Well after today's activity, this is what we have.

Sedin, Sedin, Burrows
Higgins, Kesler, Hansen
Booth, Schroeder, Kassian
Weise, Richardson, Sestito

Edler, Bieksa
Hamuis, Garrison
Tanev, Corrado
Weber

Luongo
Lack

This still leaves a forward and D spot available if something lands in Gillis' lap. Or for our prospects to have a chance to make it.

But basically little to no cap room after those last two spots are filled.

At this point, it'd be great to get Jensen and Gaunce a year under their respective belts. If the youth movement is coming, we might as well get used to it. With some health luck and improved motivation, this is a competitive roster.

We'll see what happens but I think people are getting a little too carried away with the 'youth' comment. Yes you want to integrate young players into the pro lineup, but you also want to make sure you put them in the best place for their individual development. So with what we have that puts Gaunce, Horvat, and Shinkaruk back to the CHL. Jensen and Corrado start in the AHL, and are on speed dial to be the first call ups when injuries happen. Kassian, Schroeder, and Tanev are given key full time roles on the pro roster. Then next season if things go well you give Jensen and Corrado the promotion, Gaunce the bump to the tweener stage, and unless they're really dominant Horvat and Shinkaruk back to juniors.

So that works out as:

Sedin-Sedin-Kassian
Booth-Kesler-Burrows
Higgins-Schroeder-Hansen
Setito-Richardson-Weise

Hamhuis-Bieksa
Edler-Tanev
Garrison-Weber

Luongo
Lack/Eriksson

And expect to see Jensen and Corrado in the lineup for about 40 games or so depending on how injuries go.

We could maybe add another decent signing depending on how long Booth is expected to be injured. There are also a number of vets that have fallen under the radar that could be had for cheap if they don't get picked up soon, though my scouting isn't up to speed on which ones may still be useful. Guys like Andy McDonald, Nikolai Antropov, Ian White, and so on.

I really don't like the idea of leaving the 3c open for Schroeder or a rookie. If one of them can earn it, then great...but I hope they bring in a guy like Antropov of Gomez for at least a try out contract. Booth can't play with Kesler, but he can still play (if healthy and given the chance).

Same goes for Jensen. Beat out Weise or Sesito if you wanna play. At this point, predicting Jensen, Gaunce, Horvat etc will just stroll in and be legit NHLers is a bit optimistic. It could happen, but it's not a lock.

Also, this Richardson dude apparently can't take faceoffs...I hope he plays the wing.

I really believe that kassian should play with the sedins at the beginning of the year, he showed flashes of his true potential when he did get play time with the sedins last year. Also burrows and kes have shown good chemistry in the past and it would be a good defensive 2nd line that could play against teams top line. Hopefully torts wont juggle the lines right after theirs some good chemistry like av always did. Jensen should be the first call up for top 9 duties but think he should play in the ahl first just to try to adapt to the north american style hockey caompared to european. Unless gaunce/horvat/shinkaruk really impress in training camp i doubt they make the team.

That's the top 6 there. I don't see why so many people pencil Kassian in with the Sedins. Make him earn it first. If he performs on the 3rd line, he gets promoted to the 2nd and so on... And Booth? Hansen and Higgins are both simply better players.

Unfortuately, Vancouver does not have enough depth to assemble a roster within the system. We only have about 7 million dollars left in cap space with 7 players left to sign. Gillis better think of a plan this offseason or we'll be seeing Vancouver's 4th line consisting of Sestito-Lain-Weise. Just the thought gives me shivers.
