Booth in your top-6? An 4th line that would struggle in the ECHL?

Not good.

Hey look we bought out an injured player somehow, and are still 6 million bucks over the salary cap! This is effing ridiculous.

Here is reality, with signings italicized:

Sedin (6.1) Sedin (6.1) Burrows (4.5)

Booth (4.25) Kesler (5) Hansen (1.3)

Higgins (2.5) Schroeder (1.0) Kassian (.870)

UFA (Comeau, Nystrom) (1.0) Lapierre (1.3) Weise (.800)

Sestito (.750)

Hamhuis (4.5) Garrison (4.6)

Edler (5) Bieksa (4.6)

Corrado (0.600) Tanev (1.3)

UFA (i.e. Alberts) (1.1)

Luongo (5.3)

Lack (.750)

Barely under the cap and this is with Lapierre returning, which seems like a stretch at this point. Not that 4C's are the hardest thing ever to find - I would be okay with Boyd Gordon in that spot but we might not even be able to afford that.

Frankly IDGAF about line combos for next year, it will be cap crunch and lots of youth. Torts should get the best out of them though.

I'm looking ahead to 14-15 when we have space to make moves again. I see next year as a transitional season.

I could see a lineup very similar to the OP, although I'd guess that after they get their 9 games Gaunce and Horvat would be off to junior (or would have won a more important role on the team) and we'd see Lain on the fourth line.

While Higgins may not be a top six forward (he's about as much of one as Hansen is), it's pretty obvious that the goal here is for that line to take the tough matchups so Booth/Schroeder/Kassian can exploit weaker opposition and produce.. making the presence of Higgins and Hansen in the "top six" less of an issue.

Edler - Bieksa
Hamhuis - Tanev
Garrison - Corrado

I can't imagine why this team would put its two riskiest defenders on the same pairing, hopefully they put Bieksa back in a shutdown role with Hamhuis, or count on Garrison to level out his play in the Canucks zone and hope they can combine to be an offensive threat as well. In that case the team could put Hamhuis with Tanev to play low event minutes against tough opposition, and Edler and Corrado on the third pairing in offensive situations and against weaker opposition.

This is ludicrous, even if we signed all of those guys (incredible unlikely) for the same amount they made last year (even more incredibly unlikely) and the team managed to deal Booth without taking any salary back (also incredibly unlikely) we'd still be right at the cap with a 20 man roster.

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled with the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $62,928,333; BONUSES: $0
CAP SPACE (21-man roster): $1,371,667

$1.37M to sign two depth d-men (couldn't decide on who). Jeff Schultz, Greg Zanon, Steve Montador, Scott Hannan, etc.
I would prefer Corrado getting top minutes in the AHL for a year instead of bottom pairing minutes in the NHL.

And you think he'll cost you a mere $800,000?

I don't think so.

Considering what he has done in recent years, he shouldn't be making more than that. Give him a 1 year deal to rebound from his struggles on a playoff team playing with a very good defensive partner.

If he costs much more than that, then I'd focus on Ian White.

You will be focusing on white then. Blum will command more than he is worth, because that is what happens with Defenceman. Sucks.

I'm sure a few teams will create a small bidding war for Blum, which will up his caphit.

I'm not sure we'll get White for anything like that value either.

Other nitpicks, I think you're paying a bit much for Chris Tanev, and I pray to a merciful God that Sestito isn't on our opening night lineup.

I know White will cost more. I'd be willing to spend $1.5-1.75M on him, but if we can get Blum for under $1M I'd do it.

Tanev would be payed that much on a multi-year deal. If it's a 1 year deal, I'm sure we could get him for $1.25M.

I would let Sestito and Reasoner battle for the opening night 4th line left wing spot. Gillis signed him, so we're stuck with putting him in our lineups. :P

Not good.

Booth is a top six player and frankly, better at it than Hansen, who is in your top six. ;)

Latendresse is better than no one on our roster. Hell, I'd go so far as to say Lapierre outplays him. He would replace nothing.

Sedin - Sedin - Kassian
Booth - Kesler - Burrows
Higgins - Schroeder - Jensen
Horvat - Lapierre - Hansen

Trial basis for all the rookies. If Horvat excels while Schroeder struggles, swap them. We might as well see what we have.

Let's be realistic, Horvat is a stretch to make the team NEXT year. He's not gonna be here this year. I don't think Jensen will either.

Hansen can do top 6 minutes, on paper - he is a top 30 RW in the NHL in terms of points per 60 minutes (actually, top 10 last year, but lockout year = bad sample), and I see him as a Tortorella style player, which means he could very easily get a shot in that role.
I know White will cost more. I'd be willing to spend $1.5-1.75M on him, but if we can get Blum for under $1M I'd do it.
So would I, I just don't think it's gonna happen. But I've been wrong before. As for White's AAV, you're cutting it really close to the cap paying that out. I feel like whoever's signed to fill that 5/6/7 role with Corrado and Tanev needs to be in the 900 to 1.2 area. I.e., slightly over replacement level.

Looking at Marco Scandella's recent RFA contract I really think we can do Tanev on a multi-year for 1.3 or less. But that might be rose coloured. I honestly don't care if they do have to pay him 1.5 I just want the guy signed, ASAP.
