As one of the most dissappointing seasons in the past 40 years comes to an end, i'm trying to see what everyone thinks are the positives of this debacle called a season

Positives

One more season of experience for our young defencemen and goalies (that are the future of this organization)

Some other organization might think that Andrew Macdonald is an NHL defencemen and they may be able to trade him (based on his ice time...hopefully they don't actually watch the games)

Hextall didn't extend Ghost or Mason to huge extensions prior to the season (Both should be signed imo to more team friendly contracts that could help during next two seasons)

No major injuries that should affect key players next season

One year closer to a new coach and no longer having to watch Vandevelde play

Pretty pathetic list to say the least, anything else come to mind?

I am not buying another ticket or paying for a NHL tv package until Hakstol is fired. I am disgusted.

Their AHL coach sucks. Their NHL coach sucks. Hextall better correct the ship. I am sick of watching this boring product.

im positive Haks is not a NHL coach...

Perfect example of why Hakstol does not appear to be an NHL level coach..... How many players have improved in the past two seasons? How many players have improved under Mike babcock's watch in Toronto? I can't think of one player who's play improved dramatically during the past two years on the Flyers. Two seasons in which our so called core was supposed to emerge (G, Voracek, Couts, Schenn and Simmonds). Crazy when you think about it and pretty indicticitive of how abysmal a job Hakstol has done. Hexy won't fire him unless a Sutter becomes available. Its his hire whom he convinced to take the plunge to the NHL . He's likely going to ride him until he's forced to get rid of him. Coaches like defencemen and Goalies usually need some time to get used to the NHL game coming from Junior or College. Flyers unfortunately with a win now roster needed a seasoned coach the past two seasons not a coach that requires time to learn imo.

Positive - we found our #1 dman who shows he can step up on offense and join the rush. Creates great outlet passes to transition to offense. Most importantly, shuts down and controls play in the defensive zone. All while being paired with utter garbage.

Ghost - check
Provorov - check
Morin-
Sanheim -
Myers -

To go.

It is pretty pathetic that you could write a list and somehow leave off what Konecny has done in his 19 year old season.

Equally laughable is the idea that the Flyers had a win now roster.

"im positive Haks is not a NHL coach..."
Its interesting that there are so many of these types of posts this season. Not many like this last April.

sorry but that's just too reasonable to post here. please post again with reference to one of the following approved topics

- Andrew MacDonald, simply inconceivable to consider as a real NHL player
- the persistent inclusion of CVdV on the roster has cost the team significantly
- moving young dee-men from the farm team onto the f/t roster is so obviously the solution to our problems. why don't I have a job in the NHL instead of the idiots the Flyers have hired?
- i'm super positive Haks is not a NHL coach. again, why don't I have a job in the NHL instead of the idiot the Flyers have hired?

Who the hell pi**ed in your corn flakes? I like Konecny and i've been pumping his tires all last year (before most had seen him play on this board) and in the pre season but 28 points and being demoted now to the 4th line is not exactly an amazing rookie season but heh I asked for other positives and I agree thats a positive. If you don't think having G, Simmonds, Voracek, Schenn, Mason and Coots all entering their prime 2 seasons ago as a win now moment for a franchise then your obviously too young to realise what a win now team looks like. When we traded Carter and Richards and we started to regress most fans claimed we were in a 5 yr rebuild because that's when the 6 mentioned above would be entering into their prime. Now were saying were on a 10-12 year rebuilding plan :shakehead We all know Holmgren left Hextall with some bad contracts but come on no way anyone wouldve thought we'd drop this low by Hextall's 3rd season with those guys all signed to long contracts

This again is a post from someone who has likely not been a fan for a long time. Most of the people on this board that post the above comments... post it because they've watched this team for 30-50 years and they know when they see garbage, they know it because they've seen a ton of amazing teams and have seen what good looks like... this group and the players often mentioned are not good.. end of story

Wow this thread got ugly fast.

Here's my list of positives..

-Provorov is the real deal
-Konecny is the real deal
-Our prospect group shone very brightly, led by the major surprise that is Lindblom.
-Simmonds took a step forward in leadership and defensive play.

Thats about it.

This is pretty much my list as well. When I see the way that the Flyers have played the Penguins in their last two games together, I get a sense of what this team can be. I'm looking forward to seeing a lot of that next season. When the defense can push the play (its Hakstol's style of play) like Provorov and Ghost can do, the offense looks a lot better.
I like the way that Provorov and Konecny have been brought along this season. For young players they have shown well. That bodes well for the way that the rookies that will be here next season will be treated-Sanheim, Morin, Hagg, Leier, Lindblom and Laughton.
Things look ugly right now. A losing season is never fun to watch. However, when we see games like the last two against Pitt, we can see a glimmer of a future that looks nice. Some of the pieces are there.

don't take it personally, he probably has low self esteem irl so he is incapable of disagreeing with posters without adding a childish insult to put the poster down intellectually. all while making statements like macdonald being a decent defenseman, and read having a solid season. none of which are laughable in the least. :sarcasm:

Positives: :handclap:

Provorov's development
Konency holding his own
Ghost recovering from surgery to look like himself and starting to learn how to play defense (offense has never been his problem)
Gudas showing last year was no fluke
Couts - Schenn finding a groove together, and maybe (see after the last stretch) a role for Weise
Cousins and Weal showing they're legitimate NHL players

Negatives: :shakehead

Mason going south and Neuvirth following him, tanking the season
Giroux raising questions (was it just the hip?)
Voracek playing with his head up his butt
Simmonds play at ES (solid on PP, PK)
Luby failing to build on his KHL playoff performances
Read showing flashes, but unable to put a full season together
MDZ continuing to be consistently inconsistent
Laughton buried in LHV

Expected:

lack of depth, VdV, Luby, PEB, yet no kid pushes them out of the lineup
bad veteran defensemen, Schultz, Streit, MacDonald, Manning

Rays of Hope: :D

11 draft picks with good draft position
Another great WJC showing
Progress by key prospects, Morin, Sanheim, Hagg, Lindblom, Myers, Sandstrom, Hart, etc.

The rebuild didn't start until Hextall took over, Holmgren made the two big trades, then loaded up with bad contracts and traded a bunch of 2nd and 3rd round picks - that's not rebuilding, that's running in place. Hextall has dumped a lot of veterans, along with their contracts, that has hurt depth but by garnering a lot of extra draft picks and drafting well, has really rebuilt the talent pipeline - but when you start from scratch, that's a five year process.

Positives
Provy, Provy and more Provy
Konecny looks awesome when he's not on the 4th line
The Wayne Train continues to chug along
Ghost is looks better in recent games
Gudas and his five head have been solid

I'm going to not list negatives and be an optimist. Hope Hexy makes some moves in the offseason/at the draft.

Good thread.

There will always be a positive to a season. Even if it's the most frustrating season I can remember in decades of watching.

Simmer had an outstanding season. He went from a streaky player to a constant player that has streaks on top of that.

Provy and TK are real deals. Weal seems very promising and hopefully gets signed.

Filp was exactly what this team needs. Couts looks to fill that spot next year and give filp the tough matchups. Transfer that to the Russians after that.

The ~ additions by subtraction includes losing some pretty bad dmen. Getting a higher pick this year. Prob signing ghost to a really good deal even though he is right back to his pre surgery year.

This teams looks pretty good on paper next year. Hak wasn't so obviously bad last year. This could be a new coach thing and he comes out next year adjusting to things better. Seems unlikely but it's possible he has a brain capable of figuring things out.
