So i just began skating and playing hockey again and didn't want to spend a lot, but i think i did pretty well on my budget.

Helmet: Pro Stock Mission Intake EPP Navy with Itech Cage $52 + 18
Shoulder Pads: Bauer 8000 Lightspeed [Used in Good Condition] $30
Elbow Pads: Warrior Hitman '09 $28
Gloves : NB XXV Navy $54; Warrior Pro Bully (Black and Blue) $62; Eagle X80 [Used - Palms still good] - $20
Pants: Tackla 5000 Air [Used - Good Condition] $32
Shin Pads: Rbk (by Jofa) 5k - 13 inch $28
Skates: Rbk 5k $225 (could have gotten a better skate but these fit my feet like a glove - no pain after about 12 skates)
Stick: 2 Sherwood 5030 ($40) and 2 Warrior Dolomite (Prostock)

So far, i've spent just $500, including my skates and not including sticks. I also got some pretty good compression shorts, soakers, and tape. So all in all, i think i did okay.

Edit: New Items!!

Doing Nothing
Picked up some One95 OPS a few weeks back, 77 flex is sweet, 87 is a bit stiff but what can you do.

Also hoping to get a pair of Bauer Classic shoulders...the Vapors are a bit restrictive and warm in the summertime.

And if I can spare the cash, might want to upgrade my pants to Tackla 9000's or Bauer X:60's.

I went cheap on nearly everything, as I'm just starting, and I'm a poor grad student as well.

Helmet: CCM V05
Shoulders: CCM Powerline 125 (Waiting on a pair of 8Ks I got from Ebay for 25 bucks inc. shipping!)
Elbows: CCM Powerline 120
Gloves: Hespeller
Pants: Winnwell G Lites
Shins: Cooper SG 650
Skates: RBK 6Ks (The one thing I didn't cheap out on. Started with 40 dollar CCM Rapides and can't imagine still using them)
Stick: Cheapo Reebok woodies I get at Play it Again for 18 bucks.

I got most everything on clearance, and I've been doing fine so far. I'll upgrade to newer stuff as funds allow though. Lighter weight equipment doesn't make any difference when I'm still learning to stickhandle.

I've finally gotten most of my pro gear over the last coupla months so:

Helmet: RBK 8K Pro with cage (truevision I think)
Elbows: RBK 8K pros
Gloves: Warrior Franchise, custom Tampa Bay Lightning/Royal Blue Bauer 4-Rolls/RBK 8K/Bauer Vapor XXX Pros
Pants: RBK 5K (I like the less protection than the higher models)/Pro Stock RBK 9K Carolina Hurricanes
Shins: RBK 5K Pros (Again, less protection, the higher models are overkill)
Skates: RBK 11K
Jock: Only place I choose something other than RBK-Mission Compression shorts Jock (fits tighter, I love it)
Underarmour compression long sleeve
Main Stick: Easton CNT Stealth Pro Stock Jokinen
Back-ups: Easton Stealth First Gen Pro Stock Todd White
Easton Synergy SE Pro Stock Potulny
Easton Synergy SL Pro Stock Rathje (Insane curve)
RBK 7V SicKick pro stock Pitkanen

I have pretty much the exact set up I want, everything is finely tuned to exactly what I want. Looking for a newer gen Tampa Bay shell for the pants, but otherwise, love my set-up :D
